AnonD-762416, 21 Aug 2020There have been so many occasions of Chinese manufacturers ... moreEvery manufacturer is collecting data with user consent.
It's all there when you accept the terms and conditions while setting up the phone which nobody bothers to read.

It is not even a punch hole. It is a cutout.

AnonD-762416, 21 Aug 2020There have been so many occasions of Chinese manufacturers ... moreWell, to be honest, I trust more the Chinese than the USA, who have been doing it since longer, do it more, more actively and more aggressively than any other nations.
Again, I never said China didn't do that, I said, the USA, when questioned about China spying, were unable to give any proof.
And I am sure they do have proofs, but they can't disclose those as they would also disclose their own spying which is way worse.
The fact we get so much scandals about USA illegal access to personal and private informations is simply because they are doing it so much more than the others, that statistically it obviously have more leaks.
It is well known that China do actively spy on its citizens, they don't hide it, but outside of China, there are way less leaks about China spying than the USA.
Lets remember that during the Space Race, the first thing the USA did before the USSR was to put a spy satellite into orbite, spying is as natural for the USA as breathing is for a living organism.

AND, the USA (both governments and US companies) were already caught using in non-ethical ways the data gathered.

Use Google to find it all. There have also been lots of examples of Huawei selling network infrastructure with subpar safety, outdated or legacy firmware, only to "excuse" it as "errors".
Huawei is the data collection point of a Chinese "Cambridge Analytica" with unlimited funding. That is a huge concern for any sovereign nation.

By the way, not only the USA were totally unable to provide any proof that China actually do collect data, but they also accused China over data collection that fit legality and that every country, including the USA, and any apps can already collect.

So if you still believe that China is the evil in the story, sorry but you are well fed with propaganda.
To be clear, I NEVER SAID that China doesn't collect any data past the point of legality, I just stated that there are no proof of it, as every country with enough technology, they surely do.

YUKI93, 20 Aug 2020Don't put any front camera at all? Best of luck with t... moreFirst, what we call "selfie" is actually a modern slang for what existed since a while, talking a self portrait, which, for decades, was taken without any display helping you to see what the camera see, it was on a time where you had a dramatically limited number of pictures, each pictures cost quite a bit of money and you couldn't erase and take another one, yet it worked quite well.
But even there, solutions exist :

*The least practical but already done and effective solution is to put a second display on the back, like the Nubia Z20, but it add cost, reduce available inner space and often prevent the use of wireless charging, though a smart brand could incorporate both NFC and wireless charging (that you don't use simultaneously anyway) into the capacitive touch screen, and having one Oled and one LCD could make use of a good advantages of both.

*A really simple, extremely cheap and effective solution would be to incorporate this :
                https://walyou.com/wp-content/uploads//2010/12/OneMoreFace-1.jpg
Rather than something to clip on the phone, it could be a simple 3 pieces foldable system that contain the two mirrors, it could either be incorporated into the back of the phone (it wouldn't be thicker than the camera hump) or into a phone's case, even if it break it is really cheap (and easily replaceable if mounted on the phone itself), do everything a selfie camera already do (selfies, "wefie"?, video call and vlogging) while removing all the annoyance and issues a front camera pose, and 3D face unlock could simply be still done by using the phone's main sensors (including a 3D ToF) by flicking the wrist which expose your face to the phone's back.

*A way more high tech and futuristic solution which would serve as way more than just compensating for no front camera, would be a long range, retinal projector (such tech already exist in prototypes) which give to the user the same effect of an hologram, allowing Iron Man/Tony Stark level of user interface :
                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D156TfHpE1Q
allowing stuff like the Mobiglass from Star Citizen and almost working the same way (MobiGLAS is hologram, here it is retinal projection, but the idea of something you held in front of you and you are able to view a 3D image give you the same result anyway) :
                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyzqo4uAAk8
With multiple main camera, the 3D ToF and Iris scanner (as you anyway need to follow the eyes to project it), you can also gather hand movement without the use of things like Soli Radar from the Google Pixels (an hardware chip dedicated to recognize and track hands could work fine with regular smartphones sensors) and allow direct interactions, this would negate any use of front camera where the display is located.

For the pop up, STOP CONSTANTLY TALKING ABOUT DURABILITY AND RELIABILITY, the pop up already proved more than enough to be durable and tough with RARE/DIFFICULT to find report of definitive pop up failure despite for the same phones numerous report of display, battery and/or chip failure, stop thinking the pop up is a fragile and non durable thing while the rest of the phone is a monolithic block made to last billions of years, the rest of the phone is also subject to wear and also have reliability issues, and real world reports show that the 3 previously mentioned elements are way more fragile than the pop up, which isn't even a vital part unlike the 3 others.

Bezel, though way better and smarter solution compared to notches and punch holes, is the worst solution of the 3 I mentionned as it have absolutely NOTHING to give you privacy unlike pop up which hide the front camera, and no front cam who solve definitively the issues, and privacy is the MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT you should look after when buying a phone, as every other things are just ease of use, preferences and accessories, while privacy have a real effect and consequences can be dramatic for you AND the others.
Also, when the stupid holes and notches trend wasn't a thing, we did come to interesting bezels, such as the one found in the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S9 who had many sensors, including biometric one, dramatically increasing the level of security of the phone, but after the stupid trend that shrunken notches and holes created and required to remove as most sensors as possible, including the necessary ambiant light and proximity sensors that were either shrunken down to costlier and less effective size, put under the display costing more and having reduced efficiency, or even both, we were able to see abnormalities (stupidities) like the Meizu 16(all models) with a notch with more than enough horizontal space for accommodating many sensors but who had underdisplay ambiant light and proximity sensors, which is the equivalent as putting an heavy, expensive and specialized offroad equipment to a golf car, simply because they blindly followed the stupidities the notches and punch holes caused.
So, modern bezels are worthless because of that, as there is more than enough space to put many interesting sensors, but the punch hole teached everyone to downgrade the phone by putting the minimum amount of sensors possible, even when space and cost aren't an issue.

they could very easily make it even smaller by removing the depth useless camera. 1 selfie camera with the IR sensor is enough to keep it small and subtile but the depth camera is plain stupid, people use main camera for bokeh .

Afra, 20 Aug 2020Samsung Exynos is a joke so it is good to wait for Mate 40 Pro.Yeah, let's wait for a phone that won't get any security updates at all, because of their hoarding of civilian user data around the world. Let's do that, because you pretend to be upset by synthetic benchmark scores.

Just to be clear: This is not a civilian phone. This is a vehicle for hostile data theft.

Best of luck with that, selfie or wefie and vlogging is still a thing. Pop-up camera would be nice, though there might be some concern about long term reliability. So really, slim bezel is still the best solution. Makes you wonder why Sony didn't follow the trend.

For those of you think this is.a dual camera then you probably never watch a Huawei video review before . That second sensor is for 3d face scanningn. That's impressive to get it that small

Dual or single, the punch hole shouldn't be made smaller, it should be removed all together.
Ditch those stupid bunch of dead pixels already and put smarter solutions like slim bezel, pop up camera or just don't put any front camera at all.

....freak...and here I was hoping Mate 40 pro was gonna abandon waterfall and have either a pop up cam or in-display selfie from the first screen protectors that were revealed.

I agree with the consensus that if you need all those sensors (and I get that), house them on a slim bezel or even the way the Mate 30 Pro had it. At least that design made sense...

                                  Yikes. That looks awful

I hope that notch and punch hole will disappear soon. Sony has reintroduced a bevel above and below, not only for the camera, but for stereo speakers as well, with their new models, Xperia 1/10 ii. And a flat display of course. Human eyes cannot view from above and from a side to read the content. Furthermore, most videos are made with 1080p, full hd resolution. Because resolution cannot change, a full HD display or an UHD display makes sense. QHD like in most premium smartphones nowadays does not allow scaling to full HD without blurring the content.

Still waiting for a 7inch phone to appear, dont think there ll be another mate 40x eventhough i dream of it...
So i guess i ll stick to 20x for another and wait for the latest tablet and c whether it can compete with the recent samsung tab s7.

Ugly to have 2 front facing cameras, it looks as some dead pixels on the screen. Very ugly.
