Weekly poll: under-screen cameras are nearly here, but are they better than flip-up cams?

23 August 2020
ZTE will bring the Axon 20, the first phone with an under display camera. Asus will challenge it with the Zenfone 7, which will have a flip up camera.

Come on, front camera should be only for video call. For landscapes use your main cam and for selfies...ask somebody help :) that said, thin bezels with cam or under display are my choice. Using Nokia 8 Sirocco, that is how a smartphone should be designed: small, bezels and 16:9 screen

No selfie camera at all. Pixel 4a is the nearly perfect device in my opinion. Just remove the selfie camera, throw in a bigger battery and make the camera bump on the back as small as on the iPhone SE 2020. Same price as 4a now (350€) and I'm in.

If reducing mechanical parts is the goal (started by none other than Apple), under screen cameras are the way to go. If some mechanical parts are acceptable, the pop up selfie still has less mechanical parts than flip up cameras and should be preferred.

flip up camera mechanism is ugly
i would always prefer pop up camera over flip up.

I think you should be asking whether or not they are better than hole punch cameras. Who is doing flip up cameras aside from Asus? If I'm not mistaken the only other flip was by Samsung. Unless Asus can bring something new to the table its not the future.

Depends on your usage. For me a hidden camera works, however it's done. Currently using a OnePlus 7 Pro and love the fact it has no notch or punch hole camera. The biggest problem with a flip camera will be durability, since their mechanisms are weaker overall than pop up cameras - which still get slated for durability.

i think flip is better... esp for those who "seldom" use them... like me, it pays off not to have a pretty face... :D
but, i really love the classic one - selfie on bezels... my priority is really uninterrupted descent display over selfie cam

At least give us the time to use under-screen cameras and see the quality of pictures taken with them for ourselves before deciding which one we prefer.

Nope under screen cams are no better than flip flop cams but let's give another five years and they will be perfect

The only con with mechanical solutions like the flip up camera, pop up camera or, as on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, slider camera are the possible durability issues with the longevity of the device. The ZTE Nubia X is a nice solution, but there comes the problem that people can't securely leave their phone on a table as it has a screen on both sides. This is why under screen cameras are ab interesting innovation.

As someone who doesn't care about selfie cams I prefer the under screen cause of durability and water resistance

Definitely not better because the quality is crap. I'd still take a small top chin (😂) like the one on Meizu 16 with good front cam quality, over stoopid underscreen front cameras. Just my opinion. I suspect it'll take some time before underscreen front cam quality becomes decent.

From durability point of view, underdisplay ones are probably better....but quailty? I think that's a no brainer, of course its a flip up, you are littearly using your main camara as a selfie camara.
