I'm rocking a 2070 super, might go for the 3070 since its gonna preform better than a 2080 ti at a way cheaper price tag

Anonymous, 04 Sep 2020what motherboards will support these graphics cardsMotherboards with PCI-E 3.0 will work just fine, but eventually the 3.0 might become a limiting factor. For now, old motherboards are fine. Later down the line, you'll probably get some boost from using a newer motherboard which supports 4.0.

Yeah, so you can't play Doom Eternal on nightmare settings on RTX2060/GTX 1660 because it has 6100mb, Gtx 1060 6gb has 6300mb, you can play on nightmare settings. You know, I like the theory, but in reality, things are a LOT different! More and more devs are putting limiters, so unfortunately, more VRAM is better!
Technology plateaued, but big corporations didn't...
Also, If you run out of VRAM, the game takes the shared memory as well (system RAM), so that's why it isn't a big deal if you run out of VRAM, you have backup!

what motherboards will support these graphics cards

ALPHABOY17, 02 Sep 2020Haha Resident evil 2 remake, you need 12gb to run on highes... moreThis is incorrect information and also fundamental misunderstanding between VRAM usage and VRAM allocation. Several games, including the Resident Evil 2 remake, will allocate all the available VRAM that you have. If it's 4GB, it will allocate 4GB. If it's 16GB, it will allocate 16GB. That doesn't mean it is using all the VRAM at once. There is no actual way to check how much VRAM a program is using precisely. Every application will only report how much is being allocated by that application/game. I've played RE2 with maximum textures at 1080p on a 6GB video card. There's no issue in performance because the game doesn't actually need more than that.

As an addendum, VRAM capacities cannot be compared directly between generations of video cards because of things like memory compression and memory bandwidth differences. Turing had better memory compression than Pascal, so it could perform better for the same amount of video memory. The Ampere cards have faster memory with higher memory bandwidth, which also affects performance than just the amount of memory. NVIDIA is certainly not generous with video memory and has never been. But for the foreseeable future, 10GB on the 3080 even at 4K should be sufficient.

But maybe a 3070 is still the better option, if you can wait a bit longer? But sorry, no - you can't have the 2080. :( Friend wants to buy it, his 980 Ti badly needs an upgrade.

Maybe that's why they opted for lower VRAM, we just have to wait for reviews on that one.

Quake Champions , a 2017 game, takes almost 8gb (7.9gb) of memory to run at the highest settings!
The poorly optimised RDR2 is another example.

Of course you can run them on highest settings absolutely fine even with a 6gb card, like my gtx 1060, BUT you'll most likely get texture pop-in, due to insufficient Vram.

Now crank the resolution to 4k, and most likely goodbye far high res textures : (
