Depends on how you look at it. Some think it's not useful, and some will say differently. Some people like to have different colors and change on the fly and maybe even make it transparent. Is it useful? to some yes, to some no.
To me though personally, I see gimmick like a fine print, I'll give you an example, this actually just happened yesterday.
"I just finished grocery shopping and at the exit was a guy doing promotion for people to switch to their direct energy company, people that switch will get $250 and 1 month of the energy bill free of charge. That banner got my attention, and he waves me over, he explains everything and i ask about the $250, he said, you'll get the $250 over 5 years, I will get $50/year but I'll have to stay with them and not change company for 5 years. To me THAT is a gimmick, when the banner clearly say they will give you $250 to get peoples attention but there's a catch to it. Yes, i was not pleased wasting my time with the guy.

A camera was put on phone b... moreYou're basically saying there hardly anything innovative anymore. Even though fitting a big camera into a small frame of a smart phone is not innovative. Shrinking battery size and adding more battery life isn't innovative.
Just because something is not useful, doesn't mean it's not innovative...

A camera was put on phone because it's actually has a real purpose. Camera is one of important thing back then and many people bring a camera with them to anywhere. That's why they put camera on phone. Easier for users as they dont have to bring other device. That's not a gimmick. But this color changing thing, what benefit they bring in our daily life? Do using it make our life easier? Just to change your phone color so you can brag to your friend? That's a gimmick.
I don't think camera on phone was innovation at all. But still, not a gimmick.

With a bunch of skins, royal blue, chrome, black, leather, hologram, ceramic white.
Also a bunch of cases, silicone , aluminum, chrome, hard plastic and so on.
For peopole like me who are changing the look of their phone very often this is the best solution possible.

when the first cell phone that came out with a camera in it, is it an innovation or a gimmick? To you it's a gimmick because camera's been around for a looong time. To me that's innovation because it hasn't been done on a cell phone before. Understand what i'm saying?

It can be used as a general purpose notification pad:
Green: for general notification;
Yellow: for incoming message from your significant other;
Orange: for stock-crash notification;
Red: for sound-off alarm clock.

the writer's chinese is not even "rusty", it's not even close. The girl said that they can change colour according to the clothes, one can set colours, or the colours can change according to notification, or application usage, alarm clock, or health tracking.
