I sure have this problem from the beginning. I noticed it. but for the most part it happens in dark background. So I kinda ignore it. Hopefully Samsung will come up with a fix for this.

This severe black clipping issue actually affects nearly every GNote to a certain extent -- both the n7000 and i717, and some much worse than others. The issue has resulted in literally thousands of posts in dozens upon dozens of threads on XDA, yet Samsung has never so much as acknowledged the existence of the problem! :(
The easiest way to test for the problem is to use the numbered gamma test png image found on the web (be sure to view it in a dark room). On a properly calibrated display, the numbered boxes will smoothly transition from 0 to 21, and there shouldn't be any single transition that goes from a bright grey to true black instantly.
On the official Gingerbread releases, the clipping occurred between boxes 0 and 1 (or between 0,0,0 and 1,1,1 in the color gamut). On the official ICS roms, Samsung simply shifted the clipping further into the greys to between 6 and 7. They did this by merely adjusting system-wide contrast at the kernel level by about 14. My guess is that they were just trying to hide the problem, since the display of dark scenes became slightly better -- it essentially just made everything more grey, and the clipping still occurs.
I have seen evidence of a very limited number of GNotes that are not affected, which gives credence to the possibility of this being a hardware issue, but the examples of these elusive "perfect Notes" are few and far between.
And all you denyers and naysayers out there aren't helping anyone by trying to deny the problem exists after thousands have come forward to demonstrate that it does. In fact, several owners have gone out to the stores to test entire inventories only to find that EVERY device they tested had the problem.
Thank you GSMarena for finally posting about this problem. There have been hundreds of owners like me trying to make it known since LAST YEAR!
If Samsung responds, though, I'll literally pass out in shock... :(

I had no problems until I upgraded to ICS. Now the Note is only half a note playing half a tune. What rubbish. Completely slowed down the Note by half, lags like hell, and full of bloatware. What junk. Hell even my blackberry is faster than this. Screen no problems, just the stupid Android ICS. GB was great.

Same issue with the i717R, and Samsung Canada doesn't acknowledge the issue yet.

I think plagued is used here to connote a defect that's affected a significant amount of the entirety. Let's say 1-2% units were affected, the actual figure 1-2% of 6-7M is HUGE a number. Dismissal of this fact is so irresponsible.

I have a note, and it has this problem, so have around 30 of the notes my friends set up for customers where he works, the issue is legitimate, some wont know how to distinguish the problem

oh, and how did the 2% defect rate become official? I don't think Samsung even officially acknowledged that Galaxy Notes could have this issue.

Gregory, 13 Jul 2012I just made some research on this since it's the first time... morethe point is, even if it's just 2% of the total units sold, there are A LOT of people out there who are extremely unhappy with their notes because of this issue. 2% of 7 million is 140,000. If it's really 2% I don't think 140,000 is negligible because that's 140,000 customers who will never buy a Samsung product again, and these people will discourage their friends from getting Samsung products, and so on and so forth. Do the math.
I'm happy that GSMARENA published this story. Thank you.

I just made some research on this since it's the first time i heard about it today. Found out that it's affecting less the 2% of the 6 million Galaxy Notes that has been sold. What is wrong with these 2% Notes i have no answer to. Mine is fine. Scandinavian version, rooted and running Cyanogen9 Nightlies ROM ICS.
