But, Apple naturally has to call it something different to maintain the lie that they're inventing things.
They're a mixed bag. They can potentially add to AR experience, by detecting edges. Improve image processing of close portrait photos and videos, but they can't see very far so there is a very distinguishable cut-off effect when the ToF camera's distance limit is reached.

Thought Apple was going to use 12Mp 1/1.76 like samsung, but 12 pro max has 1/2.55" again.

Is the LiDAR module actually useful? I've only heard of LiDAR being used on self-driving cars, not actually on phones. I know the iPad Pro has it, but I'm not sure what it's for.
