Flashback: Sony Xperia Z1 Compact was the first to rebel against the phablet craze

20 September 2020
Or at least the first phone not to lose its flagship status by going small - unlike the Galaxy S4 mini, HTC One mini and countless others.

Why there is no longer xperia compacts (it is your choice to believe):

- except Samsung, Apple, Motorola and LG; all other brands are much more popular in Asia than Western world, the number of ppl using phones to watch video there increases yearly and small screens are not good for that.

- the R&D used to create a small version is higher, you need to find ways to put basically everything you have inside bigger version.

- since Z5c, sales started to drop a lot compared to the bigger brother. XZ1 was one of the most popular devices in Japan while xz1c was not even top 20. XZ2c is the worst seller of Xperia history (yes, even worse than xz2 and xz2 premium) considering since X1 (2008).

- with all stuff phones pack today, you cannot give to a 13cm phone everything a 16cm phone has. Imagine a phone small like XZ2c with triple cam, ToF, Qi charging coil and battery big enough to handle 1080@120 screen. That's impossible task.

- it would be too narrow because 21:9 screen at the point using Pro apps, would be nearly impossible. UI would be too small to deal with.

Iphone 5,4" may be the size of SE. But does not have the 3rd camera, no ToF, HD 60Hz screen, no jack and battery below 2.000 mAh.

The XZ2C increased the screen size, giving in to the increasing screen size craze but then it lost that true spirit of the compact series. Nevertheless, Sony is perhaps bringing back the compact phones, IMO the screen should be strictly under 5 inches, no more

.-., 20 Sep 2020Main problem about compact size phones is inequal share at ... moreExactly this. The Pixel 4a seems to be in a nice sweet spot, it is however the only real contestant in this size/price-category. The iPhone SE is still much more expensive (in Europe at least) and the upcoming 5.4" iPhone 12 has a much bigger price tag as well.
While the Sony Xperia 5ii and 10ii have a nice width, their length at ~158mm just doesn't qualify as compact and Samsung only has the S20 (more expensive) and the A41, which doesn't even come close spec wise.

One would think that with punchholes, teardrops and notches, the manufacturers would be able to both shrink the overall dimensions of the phones and increase the screen size, but no, it's "supersize my phone" with just a few alternatives.

You can either buy a super budget one with really bad specs like lg q31, huawei y5, nokia 4.2, etc, or an expensive one like s10e, google pixel, Mi 9 SE, foldable ones. The only mid range for about 200 usd i can think of is a40, it is even lower midrange but is still better than super budget ones. And the future a4x seem to be no longer compact so if you want to buy a midranger you have to suffice with a shovel.

This was the perfect size. The Z3 Compact was one of the best phones for the longest time. I would still pick it over 99% of the phablets today.

Jovitoreya, 20 Sep 2020Yeah agree it is somewhat a niche market. Most of us only h... moreI live in South East Asia, and I totally agree with you.

                    I know those on US$ 200-400 salary...
Their phone is their only entertainment device.
They don't own X-box, PlayStation. Some doesn't own personal TV. TV is shared with other family member. Most don't own personal computer too. Computer is shared with sibling.

                    I just wondering,
why many here keep "feel hurt" to see big screen phone not sell well.
If they do feel small phone is great
They need to buy more of that small screen phone
so the manufacture will make money on small screen phone.

The only cons is the back of the phone is made of plastic.. not glass like its bigger sibling..

TcT, 20 Sep 2020Phones turning into bricks.Did you know that your phone is the same size as the first cellphone? Just slimmer. It even needs powerbanks today, just like back then.

A phone that also acts as our media consumption device and it's so much better to view media on larger screens. Those who seek compact are those who have a dedicated media device (in the form of laptop or tablet or another larger phone).

                            I have a big question...

                            If small screen is good.
                            If all desire small screen...
Why manufacture doesn't make lots of small screen phone?

                            The only explanation is:
                            It doesn't sell well.
Thus, manufacture produce the one that sell better.

                            Which make me ask again...
Why do we all keep debating about this...
if small screen doesn't sell well...
why do small screen lover doesn't buy it??
or doesn't buy enough to make manufacture producing small screen phone.

I'd still get one as a collectible, and have browsed a lot of online stores, they do have these phones still lying around but they're too expensive if I import them, as soon the ordered phone would land in my country, the customs would charge a very high fees that substantially increases total the cost of purchase

I've had this phone a few years ago. I can honestly say that it was the best phone I've had till that date and I'm still Impressed with the overall experience it gave me. That xperia line was very underated. It's the main reason I'm still interested in Sony phones and, while I'm not using one at the moment, i m still interested in buying Sony phones in the future.

The Asian market is highly spec focused, that's why you see special Asian only models with extra RAM. For the same reason screen sizes have been growing to beat competitors. It just so happens with Globalism that trend and trickled into other markets.
