Tik-Tok is a social media just like FB and Twitter. The winners in the social media business are those who grow up and emerge first. So forget the Chinese who will make FB competitors, or the Americans who release Tik-Tok competitors. That won't work. If you are rich enough, it is better to buy shares in a social media company than in a gaming company. Games, which are popular though, have a shorter shelf life (5 years or so), while social media will last even longer. Perpetual money printing machine. I think that Bytedance is better off losing the market in the US than losing any future Tik-Tok, sooner or later. India blocks Tik-Tok for politics, the US blocks Tik-Tok for money. China can improve political relations at very little cost. But believe me, it's hard to turn a hyena from being greedy for meat. The future economic war is a war over intellectual property. For example, the US persuaded many countries to use the ATSC digital tv standard and was rejected by many countries. It should be rejected, because politicians in other countries know that if they take it, it is tying a bridle around their own neck. Being his dog the US and unable to move. Huawei, ZTE, Tik-Tok are just the icebergs in sight. The fact is that arbitrary action exists in all fields. Turkey that has difficulty using the S400 or Indonesia has been stuck on US soybean imports for years even though there are cheaper soybeans out there. The only way out is to innovate and own intellectual property rights. If you're a company, don't sell your fundamental copyright. I appreciate Nokia and Sony for continuing to run their cell phone business despite the winter sales season.

You think no one's ever said anything hateful to me? Pretty much every time I defend free speech and say people's speech shouldn't be controlled some Leftist says something hateful to me.

It's simply baffling that so many people care for a useless video app from a country that is oppressing it's own citizens, where freedom of speech is a luxury, where people are sent to "rehabilitation" camps for having a different religion or sexual orientation. Oh, PLEASE don't forget that china is dumping it's garbage in the planetary ocean, killing the planet and it's fauna and flora!
            Beep china!
I've already stopped buying anything made there and I encourage you to do the same!
PS I'm from Europe and no, I don't like Trumpet either, but that doesn't mean I have to like china!

vrvly, 21 Sep 2020How random. Could do something similar for huawei but did not.Huawei was to slow down China's 5G lead. TikTok/WeChat are not hard to replicate by Facebook/Google etc... Just so happen his buddy at Oracle wants in on the action.

This is a far cry from the controlling of TikTok Trump stated. How is 20% of local stake going to control anything? If this deal goes through, it just create more of a bad image for Trump more than anything

The "correct" opinions for the masses are being controlled by a few billionaires this is not right, it is an attack on free speech which is an attack on us all.

I agree about threats/calls to violence. They have been illegal for a long time and go beyond speech as they are threats of physical violence.

There is a big difference between saying "I don't like X" and "I am going to physical attack X". The former is an opinion, the latter a threat

TheLastOracle, 21 Sep 2020Must be a democrat judge. Need I say more. The US cherished their 1st Amendment.
It's a double edge sword: it allows legal bribe of politicians via donations, and as this case shows it can be used to block the attempt to suppress their freedom.

Liberal/Conservative judges will defend the 1st Amendment.

Why does America have to be like China, just because China banned Youtube and Google doesn't mean America should follow with their own bans. America is turning into China. sad.

I still think his problem with TikTok is mainly because it was a TikTok campaign that fooled him into thinking he'd have a million people turn up for his (largely empty) July rally.

Let's face it, he doesn't give a stuff about anything except himself.
