Google launches the Pixel 5 and 4a 5G with Snapdragon 765G, 5G and ultrawide cameras

That's right, the 8-serires Snapdragon on the premium model. As is the tele camera, replaced by an ultra wide shooter instead.

now Pixel 4a makes sense which comes with same camera, look, non-flagship processor but with 3.5mm jack in the lower price.

That kind of buyer doesn't care much about the entire spec list or the design or aesthetics, hence the simple design this time with the regular punch hole camera, and the fingerprint placed on the back unlike the previous model with a premium design and the radar, ToF, hi-tech facial recognition, SD 855 etc. Google is clearly targeting a different audience this time, but amusingly the price is just like the Pixel 4 which is weird

Don't ask me how because I don't know. It's the first of its kind. The only reason Apple made glass back phones was to make it wireless charging compatible. Before that it was aluminium. Glass is very fragile compared to aluminium. I'm glad they are going back to metal since they figured out a way to still wireless charge.

The phone lineup makes no sense. 4a -> 4a5G is $150 for slightly bigger screen and battery and 4a5G -> 5 is $200 for smaller screen, bigger battery

                Why not just make 4a, 4aXL or 5a, 5, 5XL? I want a 5XL but looking at the pricing it will be $850-$900 for a SD765 phone

The Pixel is essentially a one-trick pony. I wish it would do that trick better than everyone else.

The Pixel is solely about the camera. They should have just thrown in 4 cameras, each with large pixels, and 3 with OIS, and forgotten about everything else. How difficult is that?

Is it too much to expect good cameras? Atleast 3 good ones, with enough zoom range should be the bare minimum.

Chinese brands work with many local suppliers.
No need to pay import taxes for most components.
We all know imployees at factories are cheaper than other nations.
Look at Velvet and 8.3. Both have similar prices.

Samsung has many of their components made in-house, Mobile division can surely get for better price compared to other brands. This is why even old J2 had oled.

Misfit2Fields, 01 Oct 2020I don't get the design choices they go for with phones... moreI think it falls very well in Google devices design, look at Chromecasts, Nests, and other devices, these phones are exactly like this - very simple, pastel colors, no superpremium stuff, no silver lines etc. And I like this design and strategy, I still remember the Nexus phones and tablets, those were awesome devices for awesome prices showcasing the new Android functions.

I was prepared to upgrade my Pixel 3 to the 5, if there were enough improvements. This was one of the few remaining pocketable phones that offered excellent camera performance.

For me it's a pass at this price, I don't need the Bose headphones. 400E and we might be talking, since it brings so little to the table: no side or front fingerprint sensor, no notification LED, no headphone jack, no expandable storage, same camera module, same limited USB-C port (no DP or analog audio), very little UI customisation.

I bought a Poco X3 to see how it feels and it blows the Pixel out of the water on so many levels: 3.5 jack, side fingerprint, big battery, small display hole, extensive customization, fast charging, notification LED, IR emitter, SD, dual-sim, ... and it costs 4 times less.

If the X3 wasn't like a brick and had better low-light performance, I would switch to it in a heartbeat.

At this size, only the S20 and the iPhone are Pixel's competitors, that's kind of sad.
