Weekly poll: is the Pixel 5 or Pixel 4a 5G your next phone?

04 October 2020
These two have a lot of similarities but also many differences. Are they competitive against other models on the market?

kupfernigk, 06 Oct 2020The 5 II is actually just a little too big for the pockets ... morethis means you need a deeper (and slimmer..) :) pocket to accommodate a longer phone. as i said, volume wise (L x W x h) xperia 5 II is pretty much the same with pixel 5. the glass cover (better looks, scratch safe but slippery if you are not using protection) i mentioned is adding to volume. anyhow, also this means that unless you are using a smaller than 6.0-6.2" screen you cannot fit other phones into your pocket....

I was pretty much dead set on the Pixel 4a 5G. Both of them are essentially made out of plastic, so the selling point of the Pixel 5 being made out of aluminium is out the door for me. 90Hz is nice but I'm going to stick with 60Hz anyways as I want a longer battery life. Then there's the fact that the Pixel 5 doesn't even offer an additional telephoto lens, which Google thought "is more important" last year, a stance I actually agree with now. Also, not that I really cared about it too much, but it also lost the 3.5mm audio jack. That leaves the IP68 rating, and the 2GB of additional RAM the only remaining selling point over the 4a 5G for me. All these factors combined for 120 CAD less than the Pixel 5 made it incredibly attractive to me, until I realized I really want to go back to using a smaller phone. I got my mom an iPhone SE (2020) earlier this year to replace her iPhone 6, I've since then started using her iPhone 6 daily coming from a Xiaomi Mi A1, and I realized how much more useful and intuitive using a smaller device could be. If the battery life proves to be sufficient for me (at least 34h custom endurance rating, 0h of calls, 4h of web browsing, and 4 hours of video playback), then I AM buying the Pixel 5.

No money for pixel 5 :( so 4a basic is only choice for me but if I had 1159€ for smartphone I would take pixel 5 and for 459$ add some headphones an nexdec 3

The price is decent... ditch the headphones for 200 & that brings it down to 400. Worth upgrading from the pixel 1 / 2

But be sure you don't play games a lot, otherwise you will find it a bit sluggish. I have this phone now and am happy so far. It is one of the smaller phones with good quality build. Some people say the look is a pass, but I really don't mind it and I like the black matte feel of it. It isn't slippery in hand, one of the gripes I have with the Google case designed for the phone.

4a 5G shouldn't exist, instead the P5 should've cost 599. That's it, it would've appeal to a lot more people imo and not confuse non tech-savvy people what the differences are between 4a5G & 5.

As a Pixel fan, I'm trying to get rid off my 4 XL while it's worth something as I've lost more than half the value in less than a second. Lost hope for Google

Should have added another option - Pixel is not available in my country. Because very few countries will get it.

I was deadly sure that it would be my next cellphone but then I found out that there is no dedicated camera chip. I doubt it will be able to make the same photos as the previous generation. There is no appropriate review yet so let's wait and see what is capable of. 🤞

Screens are too small and the price to high for what they offer so it seems that I will skip this generation also. Long gone are the days of Nexus phones when you got the latest specs for an afforadable price.
