Anonymous, 29 Jul 2012We thank very much for the pioneers of touchscreen in 2004:... morethe iphone was not the first user friendly smart phone. nor was it the first phone capable of many things. Even non touch screen phones had some functions way better than the iphone back in the day. The iphone just created this false image. Not to mention it was not the first phone to use rounded corners....or the first electronic or even product in general. Where on earth do people get these things? You are a fool if you still believe otherwise.

We thank very much for the pioneers of touchscreen in 2004: Nokia 7710 and SonyEricsson p910. They were bulky, very complicated to use for common people and for this reason touch screen technology were almost forgotten UNTIL...2007 WHEN WAS LAUNCHED THE FIRST IPHONE. Its simple elegant plain design-thin and rounded, with touchscreen operated by intuitive human natural gestures, combined with applications store, with super fast internet browser and super powerful and musical ipod made from the first iphone an icon. After 2007 its simple plain design with little rounded corners was copied shameless by samsung,lg,huawei, zte, meizu. The simple human gestures wich made the iphone the most wanted toy were also been copied by koreans and chinese shameless!!!.
I will remember some of the gestures in premiere on Terra for touchscreens, first seen on iPhone:

    1-SLIDE TO unlock,answer,power off
2-Double Tap to zoom or zoom with 2 fingers
3-The smooth inertia wheel for contacts
4-New interface for sms and mms with bubbles like in comics magazines

Now do you remember what Samsung copied from Apple? ALL !!!

AnonD-9023, 29 Jul 2012Dude , if a product is sold officially , u get a bill and t... moreIn business, the term "sale" or "sold" isn't used like everyday language, people like you who don't deal with business language everyday often make mistakes in understanding the context of the word, especially in an article dealing with end of the quarter results like the one you cited. I know what you are explaining to me, but it's completely irrelevant and you are not using the terms properly.

When Apple MAKES A SALE of 1 million iPhones for $xxxxx to Best Buy, they need to ship the products to them and this is where the term "shipped" comes from. NOT BECAUSE what you were explaining which is "it's only shipped because it isn't purchase by the end users yet". In the above case, it is correct to say that Apple has sold 1 million iPhones. It is also correct to say that Apple shipped 1 million iPhones. To Apple, this transaction is a SALE to Best Buy and the shipping is the reaction to the sale they made. Upon making this transaction, Best Buy receives an INVOICE--a bill in your words--for the records.(I'm not making this up... This is how business works in real world. You need to believe me, and if you are getting confused, take a class like I did)

Now to my point you've been missing all along. Apple discussed their revenue in the article you directed us to. This revenue can only come from their sales to the retailers (as explained above) and their direct sales to the end users through their web site and Apple Stores. When they mention "number of devices sold" along with the REVENUE without specifying that this number is indeed the number of devices sold to the end user, the "number of devices sold" in fact is referring to the mix of both shipped to retailers and sold to end users. The statement "Apple sold 26 million devices" is correct but not all 26 million are in the hands of the consumers. I'm sure the number of devices they placed into the end users' hands will be different than this 26 million.

You talk about how the product needs to be registered (type the serial, register warranty etc) to be counted. Sure, that's one way Apple can count, but when a consumer purchases an iPhone from Best Buy and does not register the device for weeks or months and if this transaction isn't communicated by Best Buy to Apple before the accounting period end, it will not be included in the report. Reporting the number of devices sold to end users and the revenue in same article will result in violation of matching principle.

AnonD-5197, 28 Jul 2012When you purchase an iPhone from Best Buy, Apple isn't sell... moreDude , if a product is sold officially , u get a bill and tax on them , if product is sold to carriers and retailers , that is called shipped. That is the term used when company sells products to retail chains in bulk.If consumer buys from retailers , he pays taxes , and gets a bill for that.

Any product which is sold second time is called second hand , like i said before , its jot brand new.If retailers buys products from apple , they are called shipped , if retailer or carrier sells it , then it is considered as SOLD , perhaps u dont know the business terms , once refer to internet to know what is shipped and what is sold if u still thinking shipped means sold.In business terms a product is considered SHIPPED if they sell to a retailer but if company directly sells a product to a consumer, it is called SOLD.Once a product is shipped to retailer , then product is sold to consumer with warranty , bill and taxes.

"Apple isn't selling you the product, you are purchasing a product Best Buy"
As far as this argument is concerned , once go to website and type apple product serial ID and u get information when u brought the product and warranty status , u can do this for any apple product purchased with bill from any retailer worldwide in a single place , they give international warranty and no open-and-repair-service , even if small fault exist , they give full replacement , thats why they track down every product which is sold with date and warranty , because for replacement or service , they need to to send the product status to all retailers worldwide and on their server , when u buy from best buy with bill , then it is called shipped , when best buy , buys products from apple , that is called shipped because there wpnt be any bill , but just a receipt about how many products delievered , product is called sold when "warranty" starts i.e when u buy it from retailer or apple and gets updated in apple servers to push services , some stores in US gave 4S as replacement to iphone 4 consumers as they were short of iphone 4's for replacements , but those people who got 4S wont get siri because that product is not considered as sold 4S but a replaced one , so 4S exclusive service siri is not available , thats how stats are counted. So apple sold 26 but not just shipped them.

When pro... moreWhen you purchase an iPhone from Best Buy, Apple isn't selling you the product, you are purchasing a product Best Buy purchased from Apple. When you purchase an iPhone from AT&T, Apple isn't selling you the product, you are purchasing a product AT&T purchased from Apple. Because Apple sold them the iPhones. This is part of the business process and this is how it works.

Best Buy BUYS iPhones from Apple to sell, ATA&T BUYS iPhones from Apple to sell = Apple SOLD those iPhones to AT&T to sell, Apple SOLD those iPhones to Best Buy to sell. It's business words and I use it everyday. You are not understanding how they are used in the business word because all you are explaining to me is the English dictionary definition...

No argument here if you don't understand how businesses works...

Now, applying common sense properly: Apple provided one revenue number and one sold number without explaining that what percentage is sold to the retailers. This means the sold number Apple provided is directly related to the revenue which includes both sold to customers and retailers.

You Guys always ask for "sold to consumer" figures... How should the manufacturer no the exact figure???
The only way you can give a (somewhat) precise figure is by reporting first time activations/registration of devices... And naturally Apple can count this easier as they own the ecosystem of all their devises.
Other manufacturers don't try to "cheat" or make their numbers look higher by reporting shipped numbers... They just don't know better... And guessing is something you don't want to do when speaking to investors...
At the end of the day the figures have no relevance for consumers anyway...

AnonD-5197, 28 Jul 2012Haha, if it's fraud for Apple, it's fraud for Samsung. ... moreThat is where i are mistaken everytime.......

When product reaches from company to retail = shipments
When product reaches consumer hands from retailers or apple = sold.

Product is not considered sold if it is shipped , for example , apple sells phones to carriers at a rate of price , which is called shipping volume but carrier sells x out of them = selling them in turn to consumers = sold.

Product sold = sold at MRP or maximum retail price or rates inclusive of everything.
Products shipped = sold at non-consumer prices to the retailer or carriers from which they contract or sell unlocked etc etc.

Considering demand of samsung phones , or "smartphones" , only 1 models out of 30-40 sell good and in that 1 model , 2-3 variants exist , not to forget windows series called focus , focus flash and omnia ......there are bada OS powered smartphones , combining all these , only one model sells well i.e galaxy s3 which in turn has different variants according to countries.

When company sells something to retailers , its shipped volume , shipped volume does not mean it is sold to consumers , word "shipped" itself means that it just reaches traders/carriers/retails but sold on other hand means it is sold to consumers already which means , it involves 2 stages :
1.product reaches from company to retail = shipped
2.shipped products are sold to consumer i.e reaches consumer hands = sold
You dont understand the word shipped and talking only about sold lol.
For example , u go to super market , and buy something , then that product is sold but if same product lies in store without anyone buying , then it is just shipped .

Apply common sense here , Any products which sell second time are called second hand products or called "used products" ,, thats why they use word "shipped" for selling to retailers while they use word "sold" while selling to consumers.

AnonD-9023, 28 Jul 2012That would be fraud because sales of units effect stock sha... moreHaha, if it's fraud for Apple, it's fraud for Samsung.

Number of units sold doesn't affect share values... profit does. Also, Apple announcing 26 million units sold (shipped) does not make it false claim as shipping is still selling.

It seems you understand the difference between the two words but you don't understand the accounting principles. For example, when Apple makes a sale of x number of iPhones to AT&T, they record the revenue of x number of iPhones on the day of sale. At the time of preparing the income statement and balance sheet, they don't account for the units that are still in stock of these retailers. This is just what happens in the real world, hence the report of Samsung Tab 7 being returned en mass news few months later NOT because Samsung is keeping it "secret" (you would be extremely embarrassed about using this example if you understood it correctly). And they do this with other retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Bestbuy, etc. So as long as they are distributing through other retailers, the sales revenue and number of devices in the hands of customers cannot match.

This means, when Apples provides ONE number in regards to their sales, they are either reporting the sales revenue separate from the number of devices sold to the customers OR they are simply just giving the revenue from their income statement and the number of devices shipped. No where in the article on the Apple's website states they are reporting two separate things so to my understanding Apple is reporting the sales revenue and the number of devices shipped. They would have stated it explicitly otherwise.

By the way, you gotta read those articles with a pinch of salt even if it's from the Apple's site because Apple's accountants don't write those articles, journalists do. And that particular one is written by a PR guy.
