Am I missing something or is this defeating the point of wireless charging? Magnetic snap on usb cables (lighting/type C/micro USB) have existed for ever. Is the world also getting dumber in 2020?

iOS Never Again, 21 Oct 2020Perfectly said.
These fannnnnbbboys are simply repeating P... more"Perfectly said" said the biggest apple hater on this entire webpage. So, by your monumentally brilliant logic, Apple was hiding degraded battery somehow by slowing down chipsets, to force people to upgrade, even though slowdown was there to actually make phones usable for longer despite degraded battery (and I know technical reasons behind this, not gonna explain it to your ignorant a**). How is Apple hiding battery degradation when this is a common knowledge? Even my grandma at age of 80+ knows batteries "just don't last as long" with age. She doesn't know how or why, she just know they don't last as long after years. So, go sell your BS that people just don't know that batteries degrade with time and usage somewhere else. But between phone that just goes blank even though battery showed 40% and ohone that still works but is slower, do I have to explain the benefits? Clearly you can't expect a 6 years old iPhone to be as fast as anything new. But what would you know when hardly anyone even uses any Android phone for this long. They either fall apart or get entirely outdated on software side of things. Heh.
Also entire "batterygate" lawsuit revolves ENTIRELY around lack of communication and giving users option as apple made it fully automatic mechanism with no user control. It was not about ANYTHING else. You people are so hateful agfainst Apple you'd sell any bullcrap just to drag them around and spit at them. How god damn sad and basic are you people?

Anonymous, 21 Oct 2020I guess with phones there is less chance of someone walking... moreMost of the features introduced with the new iPhone are things that other phones had for centuries or a gimmick or not that useful right now.
LiDAR, magsafe, Ceramic Shield, IP68 upgrade from 4m to 6m.
No one cares about these.
Just give the users what they actually want like 120hz display, faster Watt charging, software which can actually take advantage of that A14 chip.

The point of wireless charging is to put charger everywhere you usually let your phone down so it's always fully charged because it charge passively when you are not using it. Having a magnet means you need to remove it when you want to pick up the phone to go anywhere else, so basically the same as unplugging a classic cable that is more efficient.

With 40w wireless charging, even if I don't get the coils exactly centred, I'd still be charging much faster than 15w. I wouldn't say Magsafe is rubbish, but it's up to the hype.

Anonymous, 21 Oct 2020I guess with phones there is less chance of someone walking... moreNah, their claim was solely for coils alignment. When coils are perfectly aligned, wireless charging is 100% efficient (within its efficiency). As soon as coils are not aligned perfectly, you're further decreasing efficiency. And the claim is indeed true. I'm using BaseUs Qi charger that has OLED display with voltage and wattage and I've tried slowly moving my iPhone across it while charging. When it's perfectly centered I had the highest charging rate. As I was sliding it away from center, voltage started dropping and that also decreased wattage. Magnets always ensure it's dead on coil to coil. Problem with that is like MKBHD and UnboxTherapy mentioned, regular Qi pads, you just lift the phone and it goes with you. Magnets force you to detach the MagSafe charger with extra force/effort and some won't like that. For that I kinda like Xiaomi's approach with their charger where you just throw the phone on the pad and coil underneath is automatically moved directly under the phone coil. It's a bit more complex system, but it works with greater zero effort alignment and you can also lift just the phone easily.
