IMO the MagSafe is a great feature in this year's phones, one can not only use it to charge the phone keeping it down, but it can also be used while holding it in hand, the magnet appears to hold up strong enough to not fall, and that's the point, it isn't supposed to grip the phone super tight, nor it's required to. So one charger serves as both, wireless, or wired and the port can be used to hook up a headphone at same time

AnonD-804996, 21 Oct 2020Lol, no. How is phone that keeps shutting down better than ... moreI guess with phones there is less chance of someone walking through wires. And, even if that happens, there is less strain on the phone's USB-C connection (lightning on iPhones).
Apple is just making all sort of ridiculous claims, like the magnets enable faster charging. If people didn't know about Huawei and Xiaomi's 40-80w wireless charging all done without magnets compared to Apple's dinky 15w, they'd be fooled.

Anonymous, 21 Oct 2020If Apple didn't do anything wrong, they wouldn't ... moreLol, no. How is phone that keeps shutting down better than phone that works, but is just slower. The lawsuit wasn't about planned obsolescence, but about lack of communication and option about the feature. They just rolled the feature in, phones worked fine, but those with degraded batteries were slowed down. Users didn't have option to keep high performance mode. That's what lawsuit was about. But people just keep spreading BS about it even today, some 5 years later. Jesus. But you wouldn't expect Android fanboys to understand since they flip phones every 2 years coz their OS stops being updated. People hold on to iPhones for far longer and battery does become an actual issue unless you replace it.

It was done to hide the degraded state of the battery and force customers to upgrade to a new phone.

Anonymous, 21 Oct 2020Magsafe is a gimmick. There is no safety in the magnetic st... moreThat's LITERALLY the point of MagSafe... Some people really don't have a clue about anything. Point of MagSafe is that it's attached securely enough that it's charging properly, but if you yank it or drop it and it will disconnect. You don't want connectors to physically fail by breaking, you want them to safely disconnect. It's why MagSafe was so highly praised on laptops, because if someone walked into your cord, it disconnected. Instead of pulling your expensive laptop from desk to the ground like with all barrel or USB-C laptop chargers. The wallet attachement was imo more of a gimmick afterthought just because they could do it and not as something they were pursuing from beginning. Also you can't plant chungus 1cm thick magnets into a phone that's not even half a centimeter thick...

Magsafe is a gimmick. There is no safety in the magnetic strength there.
Things easily fall off due to cheap weaker magnets used.

I thought those MagSafe chargers are proprietary only for iPhone 12. At least they work on other devices. Also 3rd party chargers are also being developed. So great work Apple.

the good - an accessory that works on other brands, at least it is not "closed" at all unlike lightning cable...
the bad - so apple just called it magsafe when it is really just a wireless charger with magnet...
the ugly - chinese phones will make their own "magsafe" and perhaps call it "realsafe"... "misafe"... they did that with airpods...
