iPhone 12 and 12 Pro get 20% shorter battery life when on 5G

21 October 2020
And Samsung's Galaxy S20 and S20+ last longer on 5G than iPhone 12 and 12 Pro.

Sort by:

They made a big deal about 5g at the Apple event last week.

Now their userbase desperately trying to justify lowered battery life, even going to the extent of telling people to disable 5g. If that is the case, then why put 5g in the first place?

No wonder Android wins OS of the choice every year.

Hm, why is this news about Apple, when it's true for every phone running on 5G? My Xiaomi with a 60W charger has had its battery life shrink about 40% in a few months. My old iPhone 10 still lasts about the same as it did a year ago.

Funny you say that when every time entire industry copies ugly Apple.
            -No audio jack.
Entire industry copied Apple once more. May not agree with removal, but personally I don't care.
            -No SD card slot.
Useful if phone catastrophically fails. But with cloud services, your photos are always safe somewhere.
-No dedicated cooling mechanism like vapor chamber system.
You don't need one if your chipsets are not a furnace...
            -No bundled charging brick.
For once, I agree with you. Especially with lame Apple's excuse of saving the environment.
            -No bundled headphones.
Actual e-waste as I've NEVER used single bundled earphones.
            -Cheap quality usb cable.
Stop abusing cables. Seriously. People handle them like pigs in the gladiator arena.
            -Tiny battery.
Irrelevant as iOS doesn't work like Android. Also chipsets are very efficient.
            -No dual sim 5g.
Most people can't even use 5G, full stop. Let alone on two SIM's.
            -Ancient 60hz display.
Ancient displays, with above perceivable PPI and industry leading color calibrations.
            -No standard usb type C.
Not end of the world, but I agree with you. Especially since Apple has USB-C on some devices.
-Weak fast charging (wired and wireless).
Fast charging is death for batteries. People hold on to iPhones for years and charge them over night anyway.
-No super slow motion or 8k video recording.
You're arguing over video recording capabilities on devices that are industry leading in recording and basically every reviewer agrees iPhones have the best video recording capabilities.
            -No periscope camera.
It's not really needed. Insane zooms are just a gimmick.
-Handicapped nature of cameras other than main sensor.
Guess what, ALL smartphones have gimped something in the camera array.
-No seamless connectivity with devices other than Apple devices.
Not being able to use BT to share tiny stuff with Androids is a bit annoying, I agree.
            -Half baked widget system.
Widgets are so much better on iOS. On Android all of them were always misaligned buggy mess. iOS standardized size widgets are great. Especially the stock stack is cool. They just need to add 1x4 and it'll be golden.
            -Limited customization ability.
Bah, pointless. Tried all this and it's just a gimmick that you get tired or it's all glitchy. I always returned to stock launchers every single time.
-No theme store which facilitates in changing the look of the device with one click.
            Same as above answer.
-Users have to beg for new features.
Apple makes a lot of stuff on their own, a lot of which was copied into Android. There is nothing wrong for people asking for something. It's suppose to work that way.
-Overpriced products and accessories along with service cost.
800€ for a phone with 2 year software support with months of waiting for latest update. Or 800€ for 5 years software support. All of a sudden iPhones are not expensive.
            -Limited Product Catalogue.
Coz only having 5 devices a year is somehow bad. Opposed to Samsung or Realme each churning out 5 phones just this week. And it's only Wednesday...
-No privacy, company only specializes in giving users the illusion of privacy.
Even with just illusion, they are million light years better than absolutely horrible creepy uncle Google.
-Dead in innovation department despite being worth trillion dollars.
Apple is VW of tech industry. You stick with the formula that works and you never alienate existing users. The rest of vendors are Hyundai's. They may still be great, but some just don't like dramatic changes.
-Looting the customer base under the disguise of saving the environment.
Yeah, I agree, the excuse with environment is so lame.
-Blaming the user for their hardware failures like AntennaGate.
That was a bit funny, though iPhone 4 design was very iconic visually.
-Deliberately slowing down phones and battery through software updates.
That actually doesn't happen and if you actually had an iPhone you'd know it's not true (that one time it was a badly communicated feature which is now a part of every iPhone as standard).
-Handicapped nature of the OS where an user has to jump through 10 different steps to get basic things done.
Sometimes. Then again Android often also requires some stupid apps or hacks just to do something basic.
-Duping users into buying into the 5 year update scam where they give latest features 5-10 Years late.
Android and iOS are very much comparable. I'm still good for 2-3 major updates. How are your 2 years going with your Android based smartphone?

Shadocx, 21 Oct 2020They tested OnePlus 8T, not OnePlus 8 Pro...Ok.....but iPhone is very recently started having near QHD res but most or many Androids started having QHD+ res quite a while. 8T vs OP8P no big difference except screen resolution. OP8P compensates with bigger battery.

Also you are wrong. Most people couldn’t care less about 120hz screen. Which these new iPhone sales will show, a lot of Android users will switch to these and going to be fine with 60hz. My cousin already did that.

This explains why Apple left out the 120Hz screen.
I thought it was the heating issue with their SoC.

guess that settles it. They can optimize the chip and OS to get more battery life out of a smaller battery, but constant 5G will still munch through it. Probably why they were pushing for Smart Data Mode during the keynote. Wonder how much of a difference, if any, will Smart Data Mode make.
