And still we have children arguing about the numbers in the spec sheet as if arbitrary numbers are going to give them the best mobile experience in every situation.

Flagship processors are important. they push companies to innovate because there's a demand. Also how else would we play GTA 5 on smartphones if there's no processor that can handle it

How would you like to evaluate the value proposition of Galaxy S20 FE @699$ with a proper flagship SOC? If Samsung can do it, why can't Google with pixel 5?

I agree with the sentiment that midrange processors already possess enough power for the average user but at the same I want to see chipmakers push the envelope and make even faster chips. And here lies the conundrum. Chipmakers won't make these faster chips if they don't sell. So I'm hoping people will still spend money on these faster chipsets. At least gamers will. They always want faster chipsets.
At the same time, I feel bad because I'm perfectly content with the Snapdragon 665 chipset in my phone. Although, it could be faster, it's already fast enough for my needs and I don't feel the need to buy a more expensive phone with a faster processor. The only thing that will make me buy a more expensive phone are the better cameras.

As someone who working in smart phone fitting industry in China, let's talk about 'Build Quality'
1.Most Chinese phone company love to use their fanatical fans to attack other brand on social media
2.most phone from Huawei, xiaomi, oppo(including oneplus and realme)have similar build quality
2.1 ODM phone low end phone in those four company are produced in ODM factory. The ODM factory design and assemble the phone, phone company just brand thrm.
As an example, you can see Redmi9A and realme C11 have nearly same design(only back design different),these two are just same phone with different brand
2.2 OEM phone,Xiaomi and Huawei dont have their own factory(xiaomi have a small factory for mi10u only),so for mid range and high end phone, the phone company design them and OEM factory assemble it.Both Huawei and XIAOMI choose FOXCOON as their flagships' OEM factory, why someone think products made by the same factory have different quality
2.3 Oppo and vivo have own factory, for high end phone ,they use their own factory to assemble it.For mid range phone, they use both OEM factory and own factory

765G is a fail processor, it ruined the Oneplus Nord due to Qualcomm's "unbeatable" offer to Oneplus, otherwise it would use the much better Dimensity 800/820.
Google Pixel 5 with the 765G is got about the same power as the Pixel 3 with 845 from 2 years ago, if anything it's a justifications for buying older flagships.
The manufacturers mentioned, LG, Oneplus and Google are all buzz no sales, completely dwarfed by Apple, Samsung, Oppo/Vivo and Xiaomi.

It's alluded to in the article, but product lines are now differentiated into phones catered specifically for gaming and 'proper' flagship. Unlike the former, the latter need flagship chipsets not for gaming but for image processing, e.g. 960 fps slow-motion, 4K video with stabilization, full resolution still images (which still take in order of 1 second).

I think if the phone maker offer the good experience, high quality camera, good audio and screen quality, long lasting battery we don't need the flagship chipset, it just a gimmick.

Anonymous, 26 Oct 2020Mid range selling at $700 is good value? Few years back 700... moreSo much this. Price inflation has gone out of control for phones while generational improvement keep getting smaller. Remember when Google competed on value with the Nexus line, or when Oneplus tried to compete on price rather than at price? It's like every price point, from budget to flagship killer to branded flagship, has doubled in less than 10 years.

Agree with the statement. I would gladly buy a phone without a flagship chipset with a good software, if it comes at the right price. Using Snapdragon 820 and 835 phone and Snapdragon 410 phone simultaneously, i could live with that old 410. Just alright though.
