Well even now as they are thick nd heavy screen MOHs scale is 2 for furability thinner phone gets maybe Mohs scale of 1 deeper groves at 0,5 or 0,25.
And thinner device means smaller batteries but retaining same big screen.
I am asking for what sake is something like that good???
Old ways and technologies are sometimes better than new ways and technologies.
Not everybody and everything works this way but those companies must understand the very basic thing: Less is sometimes more (MUCH MIORE).

I don't even mind the current thickness and weight, I just want them to become affordable

I do. Screw glass sandwiches. Give me metal back, plastic if not possible, and a screen that doesn't overflow the edges. Also, smaller phones overall, as they are easier to hold on to, which means less probable dropping.

what i want is thinner price...

Besides, You are understanding the durability over here.

                          + easier to break
                          + smaller batteries
                          + more expensive

otherwise, no matter how thin and light they are, people will not flock to buy them

Foldable/rollable is a fad. It's actually useless, and hopefully will die out in the following years. Candybar is the best type of phone.

"According to Samsung's research, most people bought a Z Fold2 for the large screen size, the Z Flip was bought for its portability."

Well of course. Although I still prefer the LG DualScreen case instead of the Z Fold2, I can see the appeal of it for being a phone on the outside but a square-ish tablet inside. Same story with the Z Flip though I still prefer the Motorola RAZR 5G instead.

But foldable screens being thinner and lighter? I'm not entirely sure about that. I mean, some parts or the mechanism has to be sacrificed.

Yeah, but a weaker one. And definitely not as thin as other flexible OLED technology like rollables smartphone or Huawei's Out way folding phone. They just need one screen, while Book style Foldables need 2 layers of glass, screen, and frame. They will never match the thinnes and lightness of the rollable and outward folding phone. Even the 5.9 mm thick Mate XS has the same 4500mah battery as the 8.5mm thick Zfold2. But i get it, i will take an thicker phone if it means more battery, features, and durability. But i am looking forward to it. Seems interesting to upgrade from my Huawei P20 Pro.

Inevitable, isn't it? Batteries have gotten more dense and displays have gotten thinner. One tech that's stopping foldables from becoming mainstream, other than the cost, is self-healing displays that actually work.
