U are not wrong Huawei puts 23mm FL to control thickness because of large sensor used, but youre wrong on the 'cut' part. The 12.5mp upscale & cropped to 27mm because its the most favourite FL for casual/street photography. Besides u can always use the full 23mm equiv. by toggling the zoom range to 'x0.8'. Even by use 27mm, it is still sharper what Xperia can produce (beat only by Mate 30 uncropped 27mm).

UWA on P40 & Mate 40 Pro are narrower (because for Cine Lens, main sensor for video), but they proved as the best quality at the moment. Take out the P30 Pro, as its using 1/2.7" sensor UWA. U are proved wrong, again and again.

Is this the end for HMD (Nokia)? Sad that Zeiss has found a new partnership and Zeiss brand did not grow much on Nokia.

Nick Tagataka, 18 Dec 2020That doesn't even make any sense in a lot of ways.No kidding. If they can simply copy decades of research and manufacturing infrastructure then vivo won't need to partner with ZEISS. Just buy ZEISS product and copy it directly.

Q, 18 Dec 2020LOL, no one buy Vivo for 'audio'; it's just ... moreI guess you haven't been into the world of audio deep enough to discover that many minor Chinese companies are often praised for audio quality and strong cost-performance ratio. They don't have a lot of market shares in the ultra-premium segment where Sony and western companies occupy, but in entry to mid-high segments companies like Meizu are actually fairly well known among enthusiasts.

Also: Oppo Digital, the subsidiary of BBK, used to be a highly respected video/audio equipment maker in the western market. Unfortunately though, they ceased the new product development 2 years ago.

"the only brand that truly make 'audio' phones are HTC, Samsung, and LG"
HTC hasn't been selling a phone for audio enthusiasts for last 2 and a half years, and Samsung ditched a headphone jack last year. What are you even talking about?

Q, 18 Dec 2020LOL, no one buy Vivo for 'audio'; it's just ... moreRegardless of what you think, audio was the original positioning of Vivo, while Oppo is positioned for cameras (even the ads said "Oppo, the camera phone.").

Interesting that they switched the positioning now. Vivo for camera, while Oppo for... I don't know, premium?

Who dares buying Chinese 'audio' tech? If it's japan, I'll believe it; they are one of Asian countries with audio tech rivaling western.

Since Android era, the only brand that truly make 'audio' phones are HTC, Samsung, and LG. Now, not even Sony can beat those three when it comes to 'audio'; the tech buried along with SE

Interesting how Vivo has pivoted its own brand from sound into camera focused, something that was supposed to be Oppo's.

Anonymous, 17 Dec 2020Something else. Not even the Sony GM 135mm f1.8 consid... moreLol then go ahead and check the 50MP samples from Mate 40 Pro (which are effectively upscaled 12.5MP photos but taken at the full field of view) and check how soft the corners of the frame are by comparing them to the 27mm equiv. samples at the same magnification level. Spoiler alert, despite using even wider lens than Xperia 1 II, the lens distortion is very well controlled and there's only a minimal loss of sharpness towards the edges. Huawei still heavily crops the image while giving us absolutely no explanation on that matter, but at least now we know that they are not doing it just so that they can get away with bad lens quality.
On top of that, you still don't seem to understand that it's so much easier to manufacturer small plastic lenses than large glass lenses that are typically used on ILCs. The main reason glass is used for the latter is that it allows thinner lens design due to higher refractive index and the manufacturing cost doesn't matter as much as on phone cameras.

"Does not matter because gsmarena samples show it does worse than phones with 1/2.6" UWA"
No they don't, you're blatantly telling a lie yet again.

Their last "camera centered" flagship stumbled like anything. Actually, since 2017, they haven't produced even a "decent" camera phone. (Okay, 7 Plus and 8.1 were there)
It's just logo of ZEISS that Nokia can market their phones with.

Shui8, 17 Dec 2020Is that it? Awww I expected more from you. Nevertheless,... moreSomething else.

Not even the Sony GM 135mm f1.8 considered the sharpest lens ever made on Earth can give same level of sharpness across whole frame. So, please do not say Huawei phones with cheap plastic lens can do it.

Main cam is 23mm that cuts significant portion of photo to output 27mm equiv photo. (Done because it is easier to fit larger sensor/lens combo at 23mm than 27mm on phones without making module too thick). Which means the parts we were gonna see lower quality and some distorion are deleted from final image.

Same reason their UWA is narrower than other phones. Does not matter because gsmarena samples show it does worse than phones with 1/2.6" UWA. At least P30P, Mate 30P and P40P are worse.

Nevertheless, about this Vivo with Zeiss equipped lens, we can never know for sure how it will holds up. In Xperia, we already know how it turns out.

Zeiss is an excellent lens when it comes to actual camera world. But currently in smartphone world, its just another plastic lens like others (worse is, not the best).
