27 December 2020
2020 saw some cool trends emerge in smartphone design, at the same time some annoying design choices started to become more common.

AnonD-972548, 27 Dec 2020Exactly, I have the opportunity to play with some Sony Xper... moreTrouble is that no smartphone brands today are making a screen with a 16:9 or 18:9 aspect ratio today. Really, the only chance to have that today is to buy pre-2018 or pre-2019 phones.

Should've included punch holes/notches and foldables.

kek, 28 Dec 2020I'm sorry, but I'll take plastic over glass any d... morethere are different plastics... i still use phones with plastic back (some have plastic body except the display only)
xz2 compact has plastic back... and the z1 compact i replaced it with... and miro even before those... but they have different types of plastic, they feel different...
lumia 1020 has plastic body, does not feel cheap...
windows phone 8x is plastic too, along with my desire 200... but the plastic of the latter feels cheap
somehow i also blame sony for the glass sandwich design... but somehow i liked them too... ha ha...

did not vote... as holes and notches are not among the choices... good thing there are still phones not using such "viewing distructor"...
enough bezel is find, not seen any 2020 releases with huge bezels... my thumb might even cover some if i handle it landscape... i prefer good handling and quality undisturbed display over those eyesores... (some phones know how to hide them when playing videos, but it resembles a "bezel" anyway)

          Thanks! 👍

Anonymous, 28 Dec 2020why not get the s10eExynos+Small battery+Screen hole 🤦. It is only 7.9mm thick
They could have put a bigger battery by going 8.5 or 9.6🙃

kek, 28 Dec 2020I'm sorry, but I'll take plastic over glass any d... more+1. I am dealing with a glass panel phone too😔. It acts as an insulator and doesn't allow the cpu to release heat properly outside. There is always a risk of scratches and cracks too. We want phones, not table top crystal showpieces 🙄
I wish there were aftermarket aluminium panels as a replacement for all these glass back phones.

Other than Iphone, flagship models lack flat screen phones. I personally dont like curve edge screen.

AnonD-909757, 28 Dec 2020Thank you 😊 This is impressive how many commented about &q... moreYes we need more diversity! A lot of phones that come out these past few years are more or less the same. If let's say I wanted a phone with no punch hole or notch, the current option is only xperias so I just have to stuck the tall display. Don't even mention the compact sized phones, you can only get Iphone SE or 12 mini which is not even an android phone.

Hopefully next year they will follow the apple trend of making mini sized flagships and not just removing those chargers.

We need more curved, high-reslution screens; Samsung seems to be moving away from this.
Also, the trend towards pastel colors should be reversed to more reputable colors like gold, or copper colors.

Do not believe the hybrid zoom joke.
The 64MP of S20 with 3x digital zoom takes worse photos than crappy 8MP of S20 FE.

Also, poor lenses used by phones cant resolve even 8MP, which forces companies to use sharpening.

AnonD-964130, 27 Dec 2020Im here for demonorgot...drop the punch hole,or any notches... moreThank you 😊
This is impressive how many commented about "notch, punch hole, curved edges display" missing from the list, those are really disliked, even hated.

That's why I find it funny when people argue that "I am the only one that a small hole bother", while in reality, we aren't a minority but actually a big majority, most are just mostly quiet most of the time, this is exactly why I "bring it up in every articles".

We really need diversity, which mean more pop up, bezels, flip up, etc, and less notches and punch holes.

If rather than releasing 10 or more phones a year that are all more or less the same, phone makers could make them totally different from each others.

I mean we are literally living in a world where, despite their low overall number, foldable phones offer much more design diversity than regular smartphones...

I'm sorry, but I'll take plastic over glass any day. Sure, plastic might scratch easily, but all cellphones these days end up inside a cover, so scratches are not a problem at all.
Second, even with a cover, glass might break up if the impact is too much for it to resist, and glass usually involves expensive repairs costs, so no thanks.

                                  Where's the "punchhole camera" option?
