Somebody's sad that the 'cheaply made' chinese phones didn't make the list.
I can charge $1000 for a potato, but in the end its still a potato.

I am surprised that the highly praised (on here at least) huawei phones didn't make the list.

Like, as if I was responsible that there are more Chinese Smartphones brands, that Samsung make boring phones that barely change, Apple make only two family, Google have made boring unoriginal phones that lost their identity, Sony while making great phones doesn't push innovations, and that only LG do interesting stuffs.

Not surprised to see the LG Wing in the list. It definitely deserve the award for being completely different than the rest. The Samsung Galaxy A51 is a very popular midrange phone though I much prefer the Galaxy A71 simply because of the Snapdragon 730G chipset. I do agree about the OnePlus though - that is the phone that stops me from buying the Sony Xperia 1 ii and that definitely deserves my attention.
I'm really surprised to see the Z Fold2 not on the list. But since it's a second-gen iteration of the Galaxy Fold, maybe that wouldn't be surprising.

Anonymous, 08 Jan 2021If any brand wanted a variant of 689 with same tech they wo... moreStop being dense.
First, the IMX-689 is an EXCLUSIVITY for Oppo and OnePlus inherited it too.
No one interested in omnidirectional autofocus ?
Are you high or what ? The Huawei P40, P40 Pro, P40 Pro Plus, the Mate 40, 40 Pro, 40 Pro Plus, 40 RS, and Honor P30 Pro Plus all use the IMX700 which do have omnidirectional autofocus too.
You know, that phone you used among other to say it is better.
So you are saying it is Oppo and OnePlus fault for not making good enough software that really exploit properly the sensor, and also spit on the sensor, dude?
Sony almost always use 12Mp sensors, their software is great, and they can make great pictures with it, the same with Google that was known for their excellent software on the Pixel 4 series and Apple.
Samsung literally created Dual Pixel Phase Detection AutoFocus to counter the tech Sony made, which will come in more sensors, Samsung will have it on the GN1 :
https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/isocell/mobile-image-sensors/isocell-gn1/
And Sony for the Find X3 :
https://www.gsmarena.com/sony_is_developing_another_camera_sensor_with_oppo_this_time_for_the_find_x3_series-news-46919.php
"Why do you think no camera or video camera uses quadbayer?"
Say that again please, are you seriously directly comparing DSLR and Smartphone sensors ?
Even the IMX 700 on the Huawei P40 Pro Plus, which is the biggest sensor of any modern smartphone, is still tiny in comparison of an APS-C, let alone an APS-H, and don't get me started on Full Frames.
Smartphone are in a race for megapixels, because most buyers are totally ignorant and will think a 108Mp is better than a 48Mp despite a 12Mp being able to do as better, and since 108Mp pictures are totally useless, even 48Mp ones, OF COURSE there is quad bayer, what else you want phones to have ?
Saying that is the equivalent of saying "all displays are all the same", "oh this one is AMOLED, same thing as this old LCD over here", "what about this new mini-led and micro-led stuff, a display is still a display".
If you can't consider what is THE best periscope telephoto of any smartphone as an "innovation", what the heck is innovative then ?

joe nodden, 07 Jan 2021(1) Sure it doesn't overheat. The Exynos 980 doesn... moreThe multi core performance is on par with the 765g btw, at 1867 points in the multi core test in gb5. I didn't point it out because it wasn't better and I was trying to make a point. So why don't you go read gsmarena's a51 5g review and stop blabbering nonsense - it doesn't overheat. They said this, I quote:
'So in the end, Samsung's midrange 5G chip is more or less on the same level as Qualcomm's midrange 5G chip. The Galaxy A51 5G has somewhat of an advantage in single-core CPU tasks, trailing slightly in graphics applications, but neither difference is likely to be felt in real life. Similarly to the Snapdragon phones, the Galaxy maintains its composure under sustained load, doesn't heat up badly and doesn't throttle, which is always a good thing.'
7nm is not the reason the 990 overheats lmao. It's the poorly designed mongoose cores. The sd865 is also a 7nm chipset, yet that doesn't overheat and CPU wize the 980 is closer to a Snapdragon chip then a problematic flagship exynos as it does not utilise those mongoose cores.
Something tells me that you are a Xiaomi fanboy. The mediatek g90t in the redmi note 8 pro is not bad under any means, but it is no match for the OnePlus Nord and yet you call that trash. Just enjoy whatever you have I would say, and before you send stuff I would kindly advice you to research before. Thanks!

Anonymous, 08 Jan 20214k from a decent camera = more than 350mbps
And bitrate ... moreYes, decent 4K is indeed at least 300Mbps.
But phones have more issues with heat than cameras. Also cameras can use external recorders for RAW.
90Mbps for 4K@60 from phone is very acceptable.
80Mbps of 8K is beyond ridiculous.
Photo or video is much more than blue sky when against sun. Just tricks with shutter speed.
Oh, professionals used the phone and got very satisfied with results from a PHONE.

The P40... moreIf any brand wanted a variant of 689 with same tech they would have already. None is interested.
Pixel 6 is gonna use 12Mp 1/1.8" like iphone Max. Xiaomi with HM2, that may be on Motorola too. Vivo does not use 689. Huawei shall stick to the ryyb sensors.
Oppo and OP will never be able to take full advantage of it. No competence enough.
Sony, Samsung and Omnivision push Quadbayer because is way cheaper and easier to make smaller pixels. They are making much more money with these sensors they would make selling only Bayer of same size and 1/4 of resolution.
Why do you think no camera or video camera uses quadbayer?
Check samples of the reviews. Jpeg is disgusting. People, cars, plants and buildings all look like wax. S20, 1ii, P40 Pro, 11 Pro Max all can do better.
Persicopes are all the same, Huawei just have longer FL. Also the credits belong to that israeli company that supply them, same oppo was working with 3 years ago. They do everything, the OEMs buy the periscope only, they do not create. Samsung bought this company...

And bitrate isn't everything. It doesn't guarantee that the resultant footage is good.. Sony has the worst footage out of all flagships.

Little secrets for you. HLG HDR is not supposed to be used after being recorded. It is a format proper for edition like RAW.
TV channels mostly use 1080@30. Still miles better than 4K from any phone.

The P40 Pro Plus periscope is unique, it IS an innovation, I never said it was the first one.
"no free form lens"
Apparently they didn't got the memo :
https://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_engineer_explains_the_free_form_lens_of_the_mate_40_pro-news-46107.php
The punch hole is not just ugly and stupid, it WASTE a quite big amount of space, the equivalent of 3 icons and sometime more for a SINGLE punch hole, Android smartphones rely HEAVILY on the status and notification bar, while Apple on iOS use it only for status, hence why they could afford to put a notch there, Android space is precious, Meizu idea is the most useful ever punch hole related idea and the ONLY reasonable way to implement one.
Still, Sony is one of the rare who dare to not follow the stupid hole and curved edge trend, in a world where such non-normal and intrusive thing is literally everywhere, it is way closer of being an innovation than "good value".
Yes, I know, those phones are even on my "favorite devices" list, except that this is Honor with the Honor i7, the Oppo N1, Oppo N1 Mini and Oppo N3 aren't flip up, they are simply rotating, it would be more comparable to the Samsung A80, and Asus is the first to do it with multiple cameras on it with Wide + Ultrawide on the 6 and an additional Telephoto on the 7/7 Pro, and knowing that the advantage of any pop up/flip up/slider is to allow for a lot of sensors without taking display real estate, as demonstrated by the original Oppo Find X, having multiple camera on it is a big innovation.
Yeah, sure, it is "only" almost always on the top of the popularity charts of many websites :
https://www.kimovil.com/fr/meilleurs-mobiles/users-best-rated-smartphones-by-satisfaction
Haters hate that, but the flat display + fulldisplay + Jack is super popular and the pop up is beloved.
Yeah, go ahead and filter conveniently phones that aren't matching your arguments.
The technology of the IMX 689 is still amazing and clearly the future, knowing that most of what make a picture nowaday is the software anyway, the hardware advantages are really relevant over regular sensors that only have a size or resolution difference.
They could have made huge bezels like the iPhone SE, or medium one like the Galaxy 8/9, but instead they have one of the slimmest of not the slimmest one and didn't go as stupid as the Meizu 16 who had bezel but used more expensive and inferior underdisplay sensors for ambient light and proximity.
There are other solutions for speakers than thick bezels.
