19 January 2021
The 1200 runs its Cortex-A78 core at 3.0 GHz, which promises a solid single-core performance upgrade over the Dimensity 1000+.

P C M, 20 Jan 2021Exynos 1080 looks much better on paper. Exynos 1080 is 5nm.... moreManufacturing process size don't matter that much. In fact, 7nm and 5nm aren't even "7nm" and "5nm" in actual sizes. Also smaller doesn't mean better, example would be TSMC's 7nm vs. Samsung's 5nm, which the 7nm is actually better in thermals and yields. Same news for TSMC's 14nm vs. GloFo's 12nm, while Intel's 10nm has low yields and subpar thermals.

Well, though the CPU is relatively competitive, the GPU should be better upgraded and Mediatek should have employed Mali G78, with at least 10/12 cores, ie, Mali G78MP10/G78MP12. GPU has always been the weak point/Achilles Heel of Mediatek chips. Therefore, if Mediatek had made the Dimensity 1200 with 1 x cortex a78 @ 3.15 Ghz + 3 x cortex a78 @ 2.84 Ghz + 4 x cortex a55 @ 2.25 Ghz plus Mali G78MP12 (GPU), it would be very much competitive and neck to neck with even Snapdragon 888 and would definitely beat Snapdragon 865/865+/870 SoC. Then, the Dimensity 1100 be made with 1 x cortex a78 @ 2.7 Ghz + 3 x cortex a78 @ 2.25 Ghz + 4 x cortex a55 @ 1.8 Ghz plus Mali G77MP16 (GPU), which would make it competitive with Snapdragon 865 series

Anonymous, 20 Jan 2021Man, Mediatek must consider to uplift their GPU I dunno ... moreHaving more cores on the GPU would mean higher heat, so they offset that with lower GPU clock speeds. (which would actually have the same perf as a slightly lower core config with higher clocks.)

I'm more amazed by the fact that Mediatek rose from making crappy mediocre underwhelming chips across the board into a chip maker that stands next to 3 big ones (Apple, Samsung, Qualcomm). I was and still am amazed by Dimensity 1000 series. So, yeah, I can't wait to see what new Mediatek will bring if they keep the pace.

Man, Mediatek must consider to uplift their GPU

I dunno about the number yet but I'm sure more GPU core means more performance

Guys don't underestimate chip Architecture let the dimensity 800 Vs 800U be a prime example

You would think the 800 which has an extra GPU core would have stronger graphics performance Vs the 800U ?

AND THAT IS NOT THE CASE!

The 800U is the stronger chip, so let's wait and see

What I like about these dimensity line is it's only power you need which is good but concerns are with mediateks long term plan competitive wise

All I've read is that they bought some of Intel's power management business

Would love to see a high end mid range phone with these chips

Anonymous, 20 Jan 2021These chips are not meant to compete with the top end chips... moreWell they should start doing that. Mediatek doesnt have anything right now to compete against qualcomms top chip. Most of the difference is in the gpu, who knows maybe then more companies will start using them for flagships.

Anonymous, 20 Jan 2021Everything is already very good. Keeping an old year gpu bu... moreFor competition.

Anonymous, 20 Jan 2021These chips are not meant to compete with the top end chips... moreMaybe a true poco f1 successor with these chip?

Did you know... That the 1200 can handle a higher refresh rate than any Android SoC in a smartphone... Even surpassing the 888.

RW, 20 Jan 2021There is no problem with the Mali G77, but with more graphi... moreThese chips are not meant to compete with the top end chips i.e. Kirin 9000, A14, 888 or 2100. They're meant to provide lower cost but at near flagship performance chips and I think they largely succeed. Imagine getting a near flagship class chip but at the price of a midrange Qualcomm processor. Midrange phones can have near flagship class performance.

Funny how thermals are not mentioned in these chips. Wit higher clock speeds Oems should now concentrate on cooling technology. I am not buying a very hot hand heater. The Snapdragon 888, Mediatek Dimensity chips & Exynos are heaters. If you buy a phone with poor cooling system with these chips included, sorry. Mi 11, IQOO 7, S21 are throttling with heavy game play.

And if Huawei can get the HarmonyOS done right and make it open license, chinese manufacturer are finally out of US control.

At least they're not as lazy as Qualcomm rebranding chips

This is great news...! As a gamer. I wouldn't mind seeing the 1200 SoC in a gaming handset. I mean that SoC is excellent for a gaming device... I really think gaming handsets should offer both snapdragon and Mediatek SoC's from now on. The competition is closing in. So I really think it's about time that all gaming phone oems should allow there customers to choose between mediatek and Qualcomm. At least at flagship sort of level SoC's. I am pretty sure those MTK SoC's could keep pace with snapdragon... Especially these days.
