Myth debunked: Samsung’s 100X zoom doesn’t fake moon photos

30 January 2021
It was believed that the moon photos produced by the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra are faked textures of the moon.

Sort by:

The S21 Ultra stacked multiple images of the moon, this is the only way that it can surpass the A7R III. Image stacking does increase the quality by removing artifacts and recovering detail. If you stacked multiple images from the A7R III and edit the image a little bit in Lightroom it will most likely look better.

Who shot the picture with a7R3? A Monkey? There is no way it can be THAT bad

just having a beer, 30 Jan 2021I'm surprised about no one actually commenting on the ... moreI've taken a moon pic with a budget Canon 600D and 18-135 lens, that looks way better than this one. But I underexposed manually for that pic, auto mode was overexposing it...

You're absolutely right. I'm actually surprised the A7 pic is this bad...

Ok, get ready for a bad-@$$ comment...

        1. The best way to snap the moon beautifully is to take a DSLR image off the internet and convince yourself you took it... After all moon looks roughly the same everywhere.
Same for sky pics. Its not a person's face after all.
I took one pic such a way, and boy it looks way awesome than anything I took before it.

        2. Samsung's moon pics might not be fake, but the 100x claim itself is, somewhat. Can anyone challenge that?

        3. Even if the moon pic was fake, big deal, because without 3.5 and card slot, I don't see an intelligent being getting one as his full time device.

not worth it to engineer something like that to a camera and would be caught eventually.

            Hats off to Samsung 🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️

Whats the point of that comparison? Every person on earth, on every other places, we all sees the same side of the moon, there is no other side patterns! Facts!

Ironically, if u point a Huawei phone to a spotlight, it wont create moon texture as well, teardown its apk, u wont find any additional image either. Even Huawei deny faking it back in the days (up until today, only two person claims its fake). Focusing & metering control, exposure control, on one highlighted object. Simple as that. AI does the processing for you.

                Well, that is impressive.

This is pretty dumb. One pixel shifted resolution was something I was planning a very very long time ago for something else. Then much more recently they started using it on phones. So, there pretty straight up way of taking increased resolution of the moon, except they are pretty useless and low resolution through the atmosphere. So, I was planning special processing schemes to assemble a high resolution image of the moon etc, and a new type of telescope, but before I got to do that, I found out they had come up with a new technique, Lucky imaging. The atmosphere distorts the image more and more, as air currents move around in the air, which is what causes stars to seemingly twinkle. So, inbetween this flow of distortion, the atmosphere will let through an image with little distortion. So, you just take lots of photos and pick the ones out which look good, a phone could do that. So, out went most of the consumer market for a new type of telescope. But there is two simple techniques to use.

So, what are the sneaky options. One, the moon generally looks the same from our perspective over time. You can work out which area of the moon you are looking out, and the lighting, and just nap the appropriate high quality image on it from online even. But even more sneaky, is to used compressed mathematical data to reconstruct the image of the moon's surface you are looking at. These guys are unlikely to know to look for that. A lot of people wouldn't know to look for most of those things.

It's called stacking. Been used in planetography a lot. You capture a video and stack those frames to get super detailed pictures.

                      No magic here.

I'm surprised about no one actually commenting on the photo from Sony A7R III. That is some seriously messed up picture and the photographer should be ashamed of himself.. Should learn a bit about photography.

                          Proud to own s21 ultra....

                            Decent upscaler.

There are many many moon shot photos done on the Sony A7RII or A7R3 that looks way better than what this fella can do. Just search online and see for yourself.

CHINESE BRANDS FANS, 30 Jan 2021Only haters would say it is an fake image. Many asks how it... moreHuawei does the same. So never believe on an fake information.

Only haters would say it is an fake image. Many asks how it is done :
                                    1. The software recognizes the moon
                                    2. The software prioritizes exposure for the moon
                                    3. As the moon is so bright, the shutter speed and ISO is lowered, therebky reducing amount of noise, and the risk of shakiness thanks to high Shutter speed and low ISO.
                                    4. Software captures multiple images to create one high res images.
                                    5. Apply software magic tricks like colour adjustmen, sharpening, noise reduction, etc
                                    6. Final image is created

It will always shoot better images than if you use 10x zoom at RAW. Since RAW doesn't capture multiple images, which means lower res, just like most DSLR.
Samsung's image is a bit too warm though, but it is easily edited

My P1000 do it super impressive optically.

Right choice will always pay off.

If samsung is right about 100X AI enhanced photos, then not only Moon, but also Sun (Using ND 5 Filter) must be done similarly.

                                      If so, anyone reference it.

If not, no one will lose anything, because the aim of a camera in a smartphone, is limited to be pocket able and high quality in order to be future proof. Not being a monster in the box.

Same claims and issues happend in my Lumia 920 times. Advertisements were shot by a DSLR in low light which were super stellar.

In fact, until her death, Lumia 920 captured too many high quality 7MP (Effective) photographs and many excellent 1080@30 videos with top quality sound recording.

10X Optical is enough to capture every possibility in any conditions. 125X is good for me and other photography enthusiasts who want to capture a portrait of a pigeon at top of a tree who curiously stare at your gear : )

ummm.... I had medicore Sony ultra-zoom camera and it could get better pictures than this A7R III.... yeah it was ultra zoom but it had really average sensor in it, so I need to say that this 600mm lens for that A7RIII is tad crappy.
