Android-Authority, 16 Feb 2021There was a poll conducted by Gsmarena some time back askin... moreThings change with their time, when the punch hole was announced but not yet released, everyone was hyped about it, and there was a poll which made it appear like the favorite option, but latter polls had different results.
In fact, I was active on the comment of a poll on Android Authority where the pop up have a quite good number of votes and the "bezel-cam" proposal from OnePlus have a big popularity :

The same thing will appear on polls when underdisplay camera were announced or when hyping news about it were released, it has a big popularity.
The truth is, the Notch isn't that bad, it just wasn't properly implemented, what should have been done was that the display shouldn't have had active access to the display around the notch, which should have stayed only available for the status bar.
This way, it gives a clean look like a bezel, while breaking it and allowing to use more main display space thanks to the moved status bar.

This is how the notch should have been implemented, as a better bezel allowing to remove the space taken by the status bar, and not as a dent in the display.
On a hardware level it is the exact same thing, but all came down to the details, Apple got too greedy on display real estate and missed a huge opportunity, as I think this design implementation would have been much more popular.

Anonymous, 16 Feb 2021Because people don't want an ugly notch Some want, and you say that as if everyone does want a punch hole, which is far from the truth, many do hate both punch holes and notch and would prefer other options, like bezel, pop up, no front camera, underdisplay camera, etc.
But the punch hole is clearly NOT universally loved.
In fact, as someone who prefer a pop up and no front camera options, I'd take a notch that have 3D face recognition hardware like the iPhones (structured light projector) but who has a modified UI allowing the status bar around the notch and a separated notification bar below it, over any punch hole regardless how small it is.

Damn, I love the specs but that huge ass notch is a big no no...
I believe Oppo put the same thing as a punch hole cutout, so why is Vivo using the "teardrop" style?
