OmniVision's new OV50A sensor has 100% phase detection autofocus coverage

17 February 2021
It's a 1/1.55" sensor for main and ultra wide cameras. It has 50 MP resolution and 1.0 µm pixels with support for binning.

No. A pixel is just an element that captures light and can be read out. As I said, dual pixel sensors are able to produce 24 megapixel photos. But they don't do it due to the microlenses, you wouldn't get a sharper result. Some cameras offer dual pixel raw, the file size is twice as large. Dual pixel autofocus and dual pixel portrait mode only work BECAUSE such sensors have 24 million pixels, which can be read out separately! The pixel hasn't been split. It consists of two pixels as each one can detect photons and can be read out separately.

The only claim he was trying to make is that Omnivision sensors are still not better than Sony sensors, which is absolutely true in so many cases in reality.
Omnivision just made a sensor that's similar to Sony and is almost as good, but definitely NOT better.

In any case, that person you replied to has spoken valid evidences and facts to prove his point, while all you did was simply claimed the opposite and validated it by your emotions. Then all of a sudden, you want people to listen to you instead? Go figure.

What happened to their 48mp 1/1.3in sensor? It was only used in mi 10 ultra. It looked good even with xiaomi's terrible image processing.

Mi10 Ultra uses OV sensor, and the pictures are phenomenal.
But, you have to import them from China.

the sensor is a series of photodiodes one followed by others and each one is responsible for taking a point of light

In Dual Pixel technology these photodiodes are multiplied by two. "Two transistors for each pixel" in the photograph, two photodiodes working in parallel and simultaneously that allow, among other things, to offer a much faster focus.
a mobile with a Dual Pixel sensor is capturing two photos simultaneously each time you press the Take button without having to use two lenses

I like Omnivision more than Samsung image sensors. It seems as though Samsung's bruteforcing everything through MegaPixels but OmniVision and Sony are on the right track in actually improving the in-sensor AF (hardware).

iPhones and Pixel phones do have 24 megapixels as they use dual pixel sensors. That's exactly what dual pixel means. How do you think does dual pixel portrait mode work? It can capture a 12 megapixel photo with 12 million pixels and can simultaneously capture a 12 megapixel photo with the other(!) 12 million pixels and finally it compares both images. Due to the microlenses you can't get a sharp 24 megapixel photo. You would need to remove the microlenses, but then you lose dual pixel autofocus.

Mi 10 Ultra is not better than Mi10 Pro. Forget dxomark. Score can easily change by giving extra zoom range or making ultra wide wider. If they had evaluated only main camera, 10 Pro would have won.

Exmor is the most expensive, still the most popular sensors.
All camera brands have cameras with sony sensors.
This one is just a copy of the sensor used by OP8 Pro.

Apple, Huawei, Oppo, Google, LG and other will never drop Sony in favor of omnivision for main camera. Xiaomi is just trying to avoid even more higher cost.

Samsung is gonna increase price of Isocell up to 40%, but will still be cheaper than exmor.

Anonymous, 18 Feb 2021iphone doesn't have 24mp cameraYes, it does. "12 megapixel dual pixel" sensors have 24 megapixels, that's why there is the term dual pixel. But each microlens covers two pixels. That's the reason why outputting 24 megapixels wouldn't deliver a better result than 12 megapixels, so 12 megapixel (actually 24 megapixel) dual pixel sensors use pixel binning in order to output 12 megapixel images.

It will rather compete with the Sony Imx 689 and Sony Imx 766. The GN1 is a Quad Bayer Dual Pixel sensor, not a Quad Pixel sensor.
