        AnonD-762416, 04 Mar 2021Jpegs are stored in 24-bit file format (16 million colours)... moreWhat you're referring to as 24-bit is basically another way of saying 8-bit colour depth (the former refers to the entire RGB channels hence 8x3=24, the latter focuses on one colour channel - but they are basically the same thing).

        Moreover, while the format itself supports UP TO 16-bit colour depth per channel, it's up to the manufacturers to decide at which bit depth they record the colours. For instance, recent Canon DSLRs as well as Sony's Alpha 1 capture the images in 10-bit HEIF format, whereas Apple sticks to 8-bit encoding to keep the file size small.

        Even though Samsung has been using HEIF for a while now, if I'm remembering it correctly they never stated that they're using it to achieve higher colour precision, as well as whether they have a proper colour management baked into the system that ensures 10 or higher bit still images are actually displayed in 10-bit instead of 8.

          8 bit OLED = 16 Million colours

          10 bit OLED = 1.07 Billion colours

          12 bit OLED = 68 Billion colours 😨😱

              RAW can be edited on the phone and the display is HDR10+. So, not one right for you? But, as I said, they're celebrating that they're the "first" to be almost as good as Samsung.
              Sure, the heic file format is problematic as it's so poorly supported. But it exists and it can be used for all sensors and modes on the S21 Ultra.

Oppo's colour management approach is more extensive and practica, their newer high end phones will be able to capture, STORE and display 10 bit images.

                  Would be nice if they resolved issues from the oppo find X2 series first considering I purchased on and my 2 of family purchased one each as well but have nothing but glitches.when speaking oppo direct they just keep pushing updates saying that updates are being push back. But yet they've update new phone models that have released since.
                  Guess I won't be wasting a grand on a phone from them again.

                      Even the one inside pixel 1 ( imx378, also used by Mi 5s and BB Key One) can do 12bit photos.

                      If a sensor can do 12bit, it means raw 12bit.
                      Jpeg is always 8bit.

And is that microlens more pow... moreThe s21u can shoot also raw 12 bit, but it rly doesn't matter, you shouldn't pick a phone over 8,10 or 12 bit as you can't see the difference nor use it unless you are a professional photographer or photo editor in which case don't buy a phone for such "high end" photos.
                            But if you want phones with good cameras I'll suggest huawei if you don't care about gms and if you do the vivo x60 Pro+ is an incredible option, I am sure that the find x3 Pro would be an excellent choice too considering last year's find x2 Pro had a great camera, but s21u is also a good option although not the best price to performance

                              nothing to surprise about,, LG, Samsung and BOE have 10bit OLED now. even Xiaomi have 10bit screen smartphone

                                      Phones without 10bit screen (native or software tricks) display 10bit content as 8bit.
                                      Phones are able to record 10bit videos since SD845 (XZ2, G7, S9).
                                      Samsung S21U has 12bit RAW.

                                      In this case. Samsung has 2 out of 3.
                                      I also imagine it has 10bit screen this time.
