Maybe this partnership is about implementing software photography, signal processing.
Is not enough to have the greatest hardware to get the best photos and videos. Apple and Google are the best examples here in this regard. They need a very good image processing also, and I think that is where Hasselblad will get them further.

Hope they will succeed for a better competition

Anonymous, 08 Mar 2021They won't :) Trust me, none of their sensors will hav... moreWell this approach helps eliminate the issue of capturing photos with minimal to no motion blur, since multiple exposure images are shot all at the same time. Sony may consider doing computational imaging at least in the main camera app since they tend to listen to their customers' feedback (like how they returned the jack) and they can just give users the option to choose whatever style of processing they want.
After all, it's not going to change their approach in true photography. They're just going to give users another option for others who prefer the typical smartphone approach instead. If anything, that would actually make their phone cameras the best in terms of pure versatility, since it can both be as simple and reliable as a quick point-and-shoot camera, but can be one of, if not the most control-packed camera system in a smartphone when using the Camera Pro apps.

another useless gimmick. just give me a bigger sensor (ideally 1 inch) with a bigger, better, glass lens, a working iris with 1/3 of a stop steps, and a much better jpeg engine. then you can have my money

Anonymous, 08 Mar 2021Keep dreaming. Sony will never set the default cam app ... moreIt's not really going to be HDR on at all times. Of course knowing Sony, there will always be a toggle to turn it off for those who want to preserve the natural processing and look of the images.
It's just that this could finally mean that we'd have computational type of HDR processing option in the default camera app, while the Photo Pro and Cinema Pro apps will stay true to the classic Alpha and Venice science of photographs and videographs.

For the first time in history as far as I can remember, OnePlus is not sharing the same main camera sensor from Oppo. I really wonder how this new sensor and Hasselblad optics would fair up.

Anonymous, 08 Mar 2021Photo 1: https://attach.mobile01.com/attach/202006/mobile01... moreNope. Neither S10 or S20 triggers HDR all the time. The same goes for Xiaomi, Oppo, Huawei as well, in low contrast scene they have no reason to activate it so they just leave it off. You shouldn't accept what the reviewers say without checking the behaviour by yourself.

Anonymous, 08 Mar 2021Photo 1: https://attach.mobile01.com/attach/202006/mobile01... moreIt's a common misunderstanding that one needs to capture different exposures in order to show a high dynamic range. For example, apart from the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5g, Google only combines photos that have the same exposure settings. The result would be exactly the same, if they didn't combine any images, the only difference would be more noise, as long as the rest of the processing is still the same.

How is this possible? By turning on the HDR.

No, not only Apple and Google set HDR to work 100% of the time.
Chinese brands do it and Samsung did with S10/20.
Many reviews done by gsmarena mention HDR as default.

Other phones also choose when to trigger HDR just like Xperia, it's just they do it in a more consistent manner than Xperia.

So DOL-HDR is essentially Sony's way of calling dual conversion gain HDR? If so then it's great to see all the sensor manufacturers adopting this idea.
I have a concern about its dual main camera taking a UWA photo, though. Doesn't it mean the parallax will get in the way if you're trying to shoot at an object in a close distance? It would be interesting to see how OnePlus is planning to address that.

I expect them to fully upgrade the image processing to Oppo & Vivo's level this year, which I found fares extremely well in terms of colour processing, exposure and noise handling. Hopefully the sensor size increases, too.

It has obligation to do better than OnePlus.
Mi11 would never have the same great results with smaller sensor like mi9.
Mate 40 Pro would not do same using same small sensors of mate 10.

Look at Pixel. You will never find out if photo was taken by Pixel, P2, P3 , P4 or P5.
If Pixel 6 comes with imx363, results remain the same.

This should also be a lot cheaper. If it works to lessen distortion, and if it applies to the main camera too, and if it has a decent 5x or so zoom, I might get one.
