Leakster: the massive GN2 sensor will debut with a Xiaomi phone at the end of March

19 March 2021
Previously, @IceUniverse said that the ISOCELL GN2 will be featured on the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, which is most likely the phone in question.

It's amazing to think that the Nokia 808, which came out in 2012, was the first phone camera to use pixel binning with a huge 1/1.2 sensor. It has taken almost nine years for the rest of the world to catch up to where Nokia was with their phone cameras. They get so little credit for being so far ahead of the times with all of their N series phone cameras, going well back before the first iPhone.

Uh, that wasn't particularly an issue in real life usage because the HDR on P20 series wasn't very trigger-happy in the first place. Most of the time it was relying on single-shot mode which preserved the details well (at least in 2018 phone camera standards), though exposure compensation and range definitely can be problematic if you pit it against any modern flagship phones.

"P30 dropped the aggressive HDR thing but still over-saturated whenever there is grass and clouds"
P30 didn't oversaturate colours unless you kept AI on, and yellow tint had been fixed through software updates. As for P40 series, it had a tendency to lean towards magenta which makes green muted so it wasn't exactly a problem free when it comes to colour rendition. Huawei fixed it in Mate 40 series, however.

"Difference in quality between Xperia 1 II and Mi 10 Pro is pretty obvious as soon as you hold them in your hand side by side, one is clearly ODM as seen on hundreds of other phones and the other one is custom manufactured"
        Dafaq did I just read.

Jelm, 19 Mar 2021I have a Sony. Experia 1 mark 2. It's a nice phone, bu... moreHuawei P20 has horrible HDR artifacts and aggressive tone mapping because it was a trend at the time. Due to aggressive HDR images seem sharper. No way in hell P20 takes good looking images, actually they are horrible images unless you are a fan of HDR dirty clouds. P30 dropped the agressive HDR thing but still over-saturated whenever there is grass and clouds. Due to RYYB sensor everything is tinted yellow and colors are off generally. I haven't seen P40 in action but I do believe it's top notch camera that has mastered RYYB color science.

If you shoot on 1II then map your shutter button to Camera Pro app and put it in P mode. P mode is also auto mode but it gives you manual control over features such as burst ae/af lock, ev and HDR. So if you like P30 HDR photos you might want to put HDR on all the time. Shutter gets long only in dim situations and that's perfectly normal.

Anonymous, 19 Mar 2021You worry about sales of Sony Baloney. Mark my words, Sony... moreYou are ill informed. Sony is using mobile division for research of tech integration and development of such as 5G, touchscreens, cameras etc that will see the implementation across variety of electronics in Sony consumer or b2b business. They are not getting rid of it anytime soon, it also became profitable and 70% of profits come from their flagship models 1/1II and 5/5II. Chinese ODM brands such as Xiaomi and BBK can only dream of majority of their profits coming from their most expensive products. Their flagships such as Mi 11 or Mi 10 Pro are only bleeding money on European markets much like OnePlus does in US.

Difference in quality between Xperia 1 II and Mi 10 Pro is pretty obvious as soon as you hold them in your hand side by side, one is clearly ODM as seen on hundreds of other phones and the other one is custom manufactured. Obvious difference as night and day.

Except the problem with your argument is that how do you explain that SONY 1) can charge more that 2-3 times for their image sensors than anyone else?, 2) has 70% of the smartphone image sensor market, and 50 of the overall image sensor market, and 3) is used by top brand names ranging from DJI to Toyota, to Apple, to Huawei?

Brand is not the issue when it comes to parts supplies because most people have no idea who made the parts I'm their devices. So you have to produce a quality, consistent, and ahead of your competitors product to be able to occupy the position that SONY does with image sensors. And you are forgetting that SONY makes image sensors for full frame mirrorless cameras that are used by pros all over the world. Samsung does not. So it's hardly difficult to guess that they have an edge in it.

I'm not so sure Sony sensors are always "superior" , they may have the bigger slice of the market but some Samsung sensor are quite on par if not sometime even better than sony in some tests.
Also there is the underdog OmniVision, last year 48MP OV48C still mops the floor it's sony and samsung counterparts in night shots.
