Maybe GN2 will be the biggest smartphone camera sensor this year.

Latest rumor of P50 will not use IMX800 / 1" sensor. Or maybe it is, on the Pro & Pro+ variant only.

Anonymous, 19 Mar 2021You worry about sales of Sony Baloney. Mark my words, Sony... moreSony is actually improving their quality, they just need to market and work on a few minor things such as the front selfie cam, the auto camera quality, etc. Other than those, they make really good flagship phones.

Sony have better sensor technology. Yes
Sony use their advantage in smartphone sensor. No

For example, sony only use their Gen6 technology in its own used IMX555/557 sensor.Other companies, except samsung, cant get that sensor.

In contrast,Samsung let other smartphone company order new custom sensor. If one samrtphone company pay enough money,it can get a better sensor then samsung own used one.For example,GN1 is better than HM1 on S20U and GN2 is better than HM3 on S21U

              OK onething they didnt mentioned.
The Mi11Pro/Ultra have a individual ISP chip to co work with SD888's build-in ISP to make the sensor work better

Nick Tegrataker, 20 Mar 2021"Sony imx is far better in every condition" That... moreNo, the effective sensor size is identical, if pixel size (which is actually the pixel pitch) and resolution are identical. There isn't any strict guideline for the sensor type names as these are just names. For example, the diagonal of a 1/2" type sensor is not 3/2 times as large as the diagonal of a 1/3" type sensor and not every 1/2" type sensor has the same diagonal.

No, the pixel pitch and resolution is identical between two. The difference in the sensor size notation is most likely due to other factors such as cell wall thickness.

The f-number seems to be 1.95, if I am not wrong. Then it wouldn't capture more light per time than the Vivo X60 Pro Plus. Though, it would still capture approximately as much light per time as a Canon Aps-c camera + f/3.5 wide angle kit lens. And I guess that the quality of the lens could be better than the Vivo lens because lenses with low f numbers often tend to have worse image quality.

I have a Sony. Experia 1 mark 2. It's a nice phone, but not for sharp or quick pictures. My old Huawei p20 is better.
Let's not talk about the 30. That's out off Sony league.
Why? There ccd Is good. There software is crappy. I'm real disappointed. The raw does not wy. Always slow shutter, when your in a hurry.
And don't forget about the fast charge of 3 hours.
Sorry Sony, please stop with phones.

With 9 months delay, I got 1 half hearted Marshmallow update. That was about it. And the 8GB internal storage were a big middle finger for 279€. The noob I was, I thought it would be okay with an SD card. But Sony being Sony, they did specifically NOT add the Marshmallow feature to use the SD card as internal storage. Glad I don't have to use it anymore.

Gotta love Sony fans always spamming half arguments to "prove" Sony is perfect. :D
Samsung is using pixel binning because miniaturized lenses in phones are far from perfect, per pixel. Especially when everything is mass produced for millions of devices, binning >>> single pixels.

Yes, software affects the outcome a lot, but, that part is no longer Sony vs Samsung.

Are they putting all sensors underneath one big sheet of gorilla glass? That seems like a bad idea for light pollution and maybe even clarity?

Anonymous, 19 Mar 2021samsung lens are better Sony imx is far better in every condition. Even night photography is does an excellent job. Image color will be natural and sharpness detail will be clear and indepth… while in later image appear with punchy color and oversaturated. Night photo will be lagging sharpness and more hazzinezess will be present in image.

Of course, Sony sensors are great compared to Samsung sensors. But Sony sensors are only available in Chinese smartphones. So I will prefer you should go with Samsung sensor as their sensors are only in their smartphones. We need to compromise little bit on comparing camera sensors according to current situation.

Because, samsung ISOCELL GW1 merges four pixels into one to improve the low-light sensitivity and has a 1/1.72-inch sensor size, while The Sony IMX686 is a slightly larger sensor at a 1/1.7-inch size, with bigger pixels that let in more light.

Due to the bigger sensor size, the Sony IMX686 is likely to take better pictures compared to Samsung's counterpart. Also camera software optimization is also very important in determining image quality.
