Well yes actually, exactly right. Think about it - the most 'advanced' camera in a mobile phone is a standard 5MP. This was cutting edge about 5 years ago. They could quite easily put in an ultra high quality 9MP camera. But then, who would go out and buy a standalone camera?
Same with the music. If the MP3 player on your phone had better sound quality than the latest range of Sony Walkman's (NOT the phone, the actual Walkman's), would you go out and buy an MP3 player? No you wouldn't.
So yes, features are cut back and omitted and in very clever, little ways. This way, you have clear differences between top and low range models but, most importantly, it keeps economies strong, businesses in business and employees in employment.
After all, each year the previous best thing is superceded, so you have to 'upgrade' to be at the forefront of technology.
If they were to create the most cutting edge converged device out there, it would cause serious problems as 1. You wouldn't be buying standalone devices and 2. You would have no need to upgrade to newer models as the differences between the two wouldn't justify the cost. This would put businesses out of business!
Welcome to planned obsolescence. Why else has the world (consumer) economy grown consistently year-on-year since the 1980s? If things lasted for ever, we would be living in a perfect communist society. That's why the most cutting edge stuff costs so much money - as it is unlikely it will be superceded for many years to come.
And a throw-away society breeds money. So that's exactly why you cut back features, handicap performance and market like a pr!ck. Funny how we all lap it up..

sad that people buy the phones for their look. must admit that this phone does look cool, specially with the name and the amazing carat-numbers of the screen that we can all read from the news article. but i guess smarter people (rich doesn't always mean stupid) would choose a sony ericsson which is simple, a bit stylish, but can fit everything you need into a phone, or even a nokia which is more complex, a lot better, less stylish but contains everything you need - and don't need into a phone.

This phone will not have success, i hope, bcuz compagne to the technology that others phones have and the design is ridiculous, don't wanna even talk about the price....it's just an echec.....

phones are meant to be obsolete in a few months or years...watches aren't ....it's like wine older it gets the more valuable it becomes...i don't mind spending couple of grands on a watch it's worth every penny...

about a significant percentage goes to the brand...
yeah we all know the phone is bad, bulky and obese
but it is stylish ... uhmm well the name makes it stylish lol
wen will they finally make a feature rich fone with a good design.. the closest ive seen is the w960i... but im expecting more
well okie u have a feature rich phone but it looks like crap.. we all agree that style is stil an important factor..

I pay top dollars for anything that's worth the money and holds it's value. Cloth, food, watches, cars, houses, even entertainments.... But not electronics, especially cellphones. These specs are far from impressive, it's just like you put an E46 M3 engine into a E92 M3 body and sell it for way beyond retail price. I really think it's an insult how these company see the opportunity and intentionally selling these overpriced junks directly towards the "rich and the famous" So another words: To validate your success and your intellegent, buy this stupid phone.

I disagree on those stereotype comments that rich people would buy this phone just because of its name. Well I am rich, and I would never buy this phone, neither the Vertu even if I can afford to buy hundreds of them. I have a Nokia N95 8gb, and I would buy the N95 whether it's priced $25 or $5,000. Not all rich people are fools. Some of us are also smart and practical. I admit that most expensive stuff do offer better quality and features in MOST cases, but that is not the case with this phone. 2mp camera? No video? Unfortunately, some brand manufacturers take advantage of rich people (the dumb ones). But the more sad thing is, a lot of rich people fall for it. I heard Paris bought one of these =)

And yes, it is made from steel (what happened to aluminium or titanium) - so you are paying a luxury price for a material which is inferior to that used on my (in comparison) scabby Nokia 6500 - meaning this phone will indeed weigh about 1 metric tonne.
No wonder that poor girl in the photo has such a swollen ankle. It could quite possibly be the first mobile in history which when dropped does more damage to the envrionement than the phone itself. It really should come with a health warning. It could probably snap bone just on vibrate...
Oh wait... It doesn't have vibrate function.
Oh well. What else can 4000 Euro's buy you these days?....

Are they catering for those with hands the size of big foot with this thing?
How exactly are you supposed to hold something which is 3 inches thick?
Perhaps if Tag Heuer had decided to shave off two thirds of the NEEDLESS chunk, it might have shaved two thirds off the price.
I won't open the debate as to what is more beautiful - fat or thin - as this is purely down to personal preferance. But all I will say, is with anything fashionable and desirable and expensive, how often do you see a fat model?
