Flashback: LG's best phones before and after the switch to Android

11 April 2021
LG was in its element when making stylish feature phones, the transition to smartphones was a difficult - and ultimately fatal - one.

Comming from LG G2 mini / G5 / V30 i cannot believe i am making the switch to Samsung now. Note 20 Ultra or possible Note 30(?) We will see.
V30 still going strong so i might squeeze another year or 2 out of it.

BlackBerry still offered removable battery with the Z10 released in early 2013 but the brand was pretty much dead by 2011. The 9900 was really the last to offer that classic BlackBerry experience that Kim Kardashian held on it for as long as she would still scour for them on fleabay.

I just don't get why companies don't want to bring removable batteries back and just charge us more for the replacements? All this planned obsolescence is bad for the Earth. It's why I can never love Apple because they started this crap with their iPods.

More people don't mind using their phones for much longer like the TVs in their household. Some TVs back in the day can last close to 20 years. My cousin had a Panasonic "Walkman". Still works after 24 years. Just feed it rechargeable batteries.

Losing LG in 2021 is like losing Sega in the gaming hardware business back in 2001. One less brilliant and creative mind in the industry.

Pardon me, but Samsung had 9 flagships from 2010-2014. Not 10 that I previously stated. The Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus also offered removable battery but no microSD slot as Google didn't want it.

i believe 2014 was the only year Samsung and LG offered removable battery on their flagships. Oppo also offered it to on their Find 7/7a. Removable battery was becoming uncommon already by 2009.

Most flagships from Sony and HTC had sealed batteries. Xperia and the One flagships didn't have them. Samsung and LG kept removable batteries for as long as they could before finally giving in and following trends.

There was one Xperia I recall having removable battery and still had water-resistance. That's the XR from 2013. I wanted that phone. The SoC was the same as the Nexus 4 released 6 months earlier.

Dometalican, 11 Apr 2021Also to add, I recently got a 10,800mAH battery for my V20.... moreLG V20 (2016) : The Last of its Kind

I've really considered buying it again if the size wasn't so big. I've looked around for the G5 having the same capacity of battery on eBay and they don't exist. I remember putting the flag of the Philippines on that second display next to name + LG V20.

Samsung has actually had removable battery in flagships more. From S to S5 and Note to Note 4. That's 10 devices. LG offered it from G3 to G5 and V10 to V20. That's only 5. But the G4, V10, G5, and V20 are more recent than the S5 and Note 4. LG's designs were nicer.

My favorite Samsung device with removable battery is the Note 3. Had it 4 years ago and it was still solid for its age. Just hated TouchWiz.

I remember the LG Arena as well. LG made their own customized software for it. I believe it came out in 2008 and exactly the same year Android was released. I don't think LG hit their stride with Android until the G2. Because the Optimus G wasn't that popular and Nexus 4 and 5 are really Google phones just manufactured by LG.

I just like LG as a company. Never got political like Apple and Google did. They clearly had its share of haters thanks to some faulty hardware and software wasn't great either. But LG's time in the mobile industry ran its course. Market is saturated as is. No point being in it if you're hemorrhaging money.

An0n, 11 Apr 2021What? Do you expect they have some loyalty? Nope. LG has... moreIt is not about loyalty. It os about honesty.

It is not right to bash any product just because the brand does not give you the product for free or make fake compliments because you get free units.

Many users end up choosing new phone based on what they say.
Htc U12+ is better than s9+, but it was heavily bashed by many of them and few tech sites.

How many of them admit s21 is worse than s20? The way they say, you may believe s21 is the best phone of 2021.

G6 was fantastic. Great build!!!!! great performance.

teorema67, 11 Apr 2021My favorites were G8s, G4, G3 😃cool, mine was all the v series, specially the v10, first to be attracted to before i knew anything about smartphones...

What makes lg going bankrupt is the sudden death of G3 and G4.. the motherboard suddenly death even you never drop your phone to the hard surface..

Who wants to buy phone that only live for 1-2 years and suddenly death without warning so you never have a chance to backup its data?

Also to add, I recently got a 10,800mAH battery for my V20. Only 38% dropped in 24 hours of moderate use. Once I get my Xperia or ROG, I'm going to repair the display and rear camera glass because the V20 is very hard to replace. I'll probably root it and get it Lineage later on.

"Which other company will be making such out of the box designs in 2021?"

The million-dollar question. Only Sony and gaming phones are doing things differently now. That's why I really don't like where the smartphone market is headed. It's even worse for those who live in the US (like me), Singapore, Malaysia, etc. We have barely any options in flagships now.

I really enjoyed my time with LG G4 and still using G7.
It's sad to see how quickly we are loosing non China companies in mobile space.

Kangal, 11 Apr 2021I find it sad that GSMArena has the audacity to suddenly &q... moreI read the gsmarena reviews to all the major LG phones that came out and I don't think they were biased at all.

Just because a phone has a lot of innovation does not mean it's good for the average customer.

The fact is that after galaxy s4, LG was always behind Samsung in the aspects that matter most like:
                          - display quality: Samsung screens are just unmatched.
                          - processing power: Samsung always used the best available processor for their galaxies (remember they skipped SD810 and had a great processor while other phones were overheating or went for the less powerful 808 - LG g4 included)
                          - camera quality (quality, not number of cameras) : while Samsung was improving every single year, LG stagnated a lot.

Sure, they came up with cool gimmicks, but those do not swing customers if the basic features are not at the top.

LG G6 and Q7 were the best phones they made design wise.

                              My favorites were G8s, G4, G3 😃

I had a Sony midranger in 2015 and the 1 promised update came half-baked 1 year late with missing the most necessary feature, using SD cards as internal storage, because this €279 phone had 8 GB of internal storage.

Sad for LG. Sony is next. Nokia too. Soon we will only have Apple and Samsung. And hopefully Xiaomi and OnePlus if they don't ban them like they banned Huawei.

Once small, fan lead brands stop taking notice of their past purchasers comments and feedback, their finished, it killed HTC too.
+ the big boys can carry losses for longer and get near monopoly markets as reward..
