Motorola cancels ICS update for certain devices

29 September, 2012
The unlucky devices to remain stuck on Gingerbread are Atrix 4G, Photon 4G and the Electrify.

AnonD-63818, 29 Sep 2012Meanwhile iPhone 3GS users are updating to iOS 6iOS version numbers are misleading. Also, the 3GS doesn't get a lot of he features. What it gets is essentially a consolation feature pack, but with a nice big number jump.

Still, even with that bit of smart deception, iOS is the better than all nonnexus androids when it comes to upgrades when it comes to upgrades - and this is from an Android fan...

No single manufacturer is free of blame.

Its an unlocked nexus for me all the way. The more I see, the surer I am.

Still, Sony has done a good job. Slow, yes, but they kept their word, save the Xperia play.

Samsung did announce a number of devices jumping to jelly bean, hut they still did leave quite a lot of capable devices in the dust.

HTC was okay as they did upgrade quite a few devices, but they flip flopped on quite a few too...

Motorola has their jellybean promise - but unless they unlock boot loaders for international unlocked devices, I've sworn off them. Not they've had a good record since then. Then again, their more recent devices have been lightly skinned and are quite a departure from older devices. It is still unknown if they are going to put that to any use...

LG is utterly hopeless. Their phones are not the problem, they are. Take the optimus G, for example. It is a brilliant phone. I'd never buy it though, since I just don't trust LG to take care of their custmers

I can't understand why the xoom, which has the exact same specs as the phones whose updates were cancelled, is already on jelly bean and Motorola can't seem to commit to their plans.

Arif, 29 Sep 2012I don't see why the Motorola ATRIX 4G has to suffer. It is ... moreHey arif, xoom also using nvidia tegra 2, but got update for ics. Its not because nvidia, but because motorola is poor company now. They dont know how to satisfy their customer. Even some loyal customer like me who have been using motorola since soo long. But now i think enough for me. Ill look for htc or experia in my next androis device

Tegra2 used in Xoom too. so i don't think chip set is the problem here.

I think the problem is they have many platform and don't have enough man power to do it.

The agreement to update the device for 18 months is just a shit.

Im using motocharm, and its stuck with eclair. Now using atrix 4g stuck with gingerbread. Im tires using motorola. My friend defy also stuck with froyo. I was planning to buy razr m but considering how poor this company with update, i think i will move to xperia v or lg. They just disappoint me too much. Even old sony ericsson which company already rip (sony only now) still got ics update even for low device like xperia mini pro get ics. I really want to throw my atrix to garbage now. Really!!!

And this is exactly why Moto was under loss before Google bought it....only god knows why they cannot put Gingerbread to Atrix 4g and Photon 4G...pholes like Xperia Ray/Neo V got the update , and its a single core processor with only 350MB RAM.

Motorola will lose customers because of this.
I had my Atrix 4G all these days waiting for the update. I am extremely disappointed.

Let's clear this up,atrix got a good upgrade with the 2.3 but they should upgrade all of their models for their after sales reputation, there are phones like me with the 2x that we still suffer from problems like that the gps is not working, reboot, bad cpu performance, overheating,a bad rom manager and that's why people need updates and they suffer from old forgoten softwarenot ,not even devs can upgrade the devices without each model's source code that those OEMs left over with their owners. That's why motorola fall apart and that's why lg does bad sales. Now people complain and they let each other know of their bad experiences.Keep in mind that only google devices work 100% and they get beter even every year without being a money waste

And calling Samsung a bad updater!
Motorola is much worse the Atrix 4g/1 only has been updated for once from Froyo to Gingerbread!

While Samsung and other brands moving to JellyBean, Motorola is still confising about decide what models will be upgraded to ICS. Poor Motorola guys.

I don't see why the Motorola ATRIX 4G has to suffer. It is definitely capable of ICS; it sports a NVIDIA Tegra 2, a dual-core processor. However, this could be the same reason why the LG Optimus 2x doesn't have ICS world-wide yet too; since they're both NVIDIA Tegra 2's.

Perhaps it's something on NVIDIA's end?
