If Google made a term which forbidden manufacturers to not support their devices before 2 years is up, this issue will not happen.
Assuming Google made a term like that, and if all manufacturers go away and support other OS instead, what will happen? Of cause, Google will sell their phones themself like Apple does. But that's a bad move, considered how business work.
It's just a business game by Google and its customers(our lovely manufacturers). That's all.

Anonymous, 02 Oct 2012Yes Android Fanboy I agree with you totally. IOS6 is a actu... moreAt least when Apple annouce an update, all qualifying devices get it as soon as it's released. When Android update comes around, it's most likely time to buy new high-end phone.

The reason GingerBread is still the most popular is that Companies like Samsung, HTC, sony and so on that use Android are not updating the current devices out there to use the newer OS's the HTC Desire HD (DHD) was ment to be getting ICS but then the month before it was scheduled to be released, HTC said they had dropped the idea of ICS on the DHD so that is still on GingerBread. I know loads of phone's that were ment to be receiving the later OS's and not they are not. My old DHD has ICS on it as i put it on and it runs it nicely and that is with Sense... so HTC's excuse of it not being able to run ICS is crap.. head over to XDA Developers and thats where you will find the info on putting ICS on devices that the manufacturers say cannot take ICS...
This is not a Google problem, its their customers Samsung, HTC, etc. thats causing this problem by not updating.
Also there are thousands of people out there that cause of the current predicament that loads of countries are in have no jobs so they are not able to go out and buy the latest handset that uses ICS. so i say again its the phone manufacturers that are causing googles problem by not updating their previous phones with the newer software

And for the low IQ ones out there that don't understand why OEMs don't update their flagships or any other phone for that matter and came up with lame excuses that their previous flagship doesn't have enough power to run the latest and greatest iteration of Android OS:
Look at the graph!
See how the SGS3 line goes straight up towards the previous flagship SGS2 line which is slowly declining?
Scamsung is getting money from suckers that abandon their SGS2 and buy the brand new SGS3, while there is virtually nothing wrong with the old SGS2! Why do you even need quad-core? Do you use Motorola's webtop app? You use some kind of advanced Android game that needs 4 CPU cores? No such game exist yet!
I'm just saying that all of you are supporting OEM's behaviour of not updating their phones to the latest Android OS by buying their latest flagship!
But as they say... "progress is inevitable" and "you can't buy happiness", but buying the world's greatest shinny new gadget sure helps ;P

Is it me or were there more updates before than now? I have a Sidekick 4G still running on Froyo...and this used to be one of T-Mobile's most popular phones.
I can't afford to upgrade every 6 months. Even with a 12 month partial discount, ICS phones are too expensive for me.
I don't know....maybe I'm wrong about the update frequency. It just feels like Samsung has some kind of stranglehold on updating dated phones.

Awww man... so many top rated comments and none are not even close to truth.
Some are actually pretty false, like: "only armv6 samsung are not getting any updates!"
Yeah? Really? What about my armv7 hummingbird SGS1? This phone totally qualifies for an ICS/JB upgrade!
And the notorious comment: "This is simply caused by manufacturers like Motorola refusing to update their Android devices with new versions of the OS."
You put Motorola up front? Hahahaha, don't make me laugh!
Well back to business:
The truth behind such low adoption rate is because of the biggest culprit in Android market share, some of you think these OEM market share numbers are even between the OEMs. You're sadly mistaken!
Scamsung is the root of all evil. Scamsung is far above any android OEM. But hey, don't trust me, trust the exact statistical numbers provided by appbrain:
http://www.appbrain.com/stats/top-android-phones
Of Top10 android phones, 8 are Samsung phones!
And SGS1 with GB is still well above others, and so are other GB running Samsung phones!
You can trust me on this one: a month after SGS3 gets the official JB update JB numbers will go from 1.8% to 10.8% in an instant.
And their SDK numbers are also pretty close to this article's numbers:

AnonD-16334, 02 Oct 20121)Apple has no many devices since their 1st iphone unlike ... moreYes Android Fanboy I agree with you totally. IOS6 is a actually a mid range OS not even capable of competing with Symbian. Those so called apple engineers bring in panorama shot feature to IOS6 which was in windows mobile 6.1 over 3 years ago. No doubt an entry to mid range operating system like IOS6 is likely to be compatible with all the apple phones. That's the reason apple phones are purchased by smart people like the one in this video:

AnonD-49439, 02 Oct 2012im still confused why all manufacture said they didn't upgr... moreUsually "hardware compatibility issues" mean that either the manufacturer does not want to perform the extensive testing that a major OS version update would require and handle all the likely support problems a major update would incur, or that the manufacturer wants to sell their newer devices instead. Or all three. Sometimes there are legitimate hardware issues which prevent updating, but not very often, I'm afraid...

Then how fast is the uptake of Iphone5 has it reach 5% of all iphones, yet?
For most people using Android the adapting of newer Androids is totally depending on manufacturers, release of update. Most high-end Android mobiles have a life frame of more than two years. Most manufacturers stop supporting older models before that.
So there is many Android user happily running 2.2, 2.3 on dated phones.
Also remember that 1% of Android phones means many millions of phones and users. Due to it's market leading position.

Love the denial and delusion of the fanboys here. So:
1. You are all saying its good that Android has a slow adoption rate? Yes/No
2. It doesn't matter that huge numbers of Android phones don't get security updates?
I don't know about you guys, but there's no way I would spin the 1.2% as good news.

If google kept there OS for one phone and one tab (nexus and nexus 7 tab) it will better and they can compete with Apple.

but some indie developer can porting new os for old device, or indie developer is smart and have more bucks to develop than big manufacture likes Sa,So,Mo,H ??

many handsets are NOT getting ics updates because of sheer inaptitudes and bad aftersales customer services of MAKERS and NETWORKS driven by money profits and BAD POOR CONSUMERS PROTECTIONS LAWS. CORPS cannot be held to account for half truths and sheer overhyped marketting ploys to DECEIVE UNSUSPECTING TRUSTING HELPLESS CUSTOMERS .. google must enforce discipline amongst ANDROID HANDSETS MAKERS NETWORKD .. TECHNOLOGY must keep moving on forwards despite sheer greeds of handsetsmakers and networks running wild .GB works fine .

Anonymous, 02 Oct 2012wow what a surprised, THE BEST OS IN THE WORLD (claimed by ... more1)Apple has no many devices since their 1st iphone unlike samsung and htc, to be concerned about ,And all of them were flagships.
so its not possible to update tons of low end mid end android devices.
2)Apple is kinda fooling customers by doing minor changes to new os unlike Android's major updates which sometimes exceeds hardware limitations .the result could be,apple will be able to put their mostly unchanged os to older flagships eg:ip3GS whereas android OEMs will need to kick their older flagships out of their update charts due to hardware limtations eg: SGS
3)i think GB is still better than ios6 in the case of customer satisfaction and freedom to usual customers. Usual customers wouldnt think about new os in near future until they buy a new low or mid end device with squeezed ICS or jb.
These are the answers to your doubts !HUh

only armv6 samsung are not getting any updates! while sony ericsson live with walkman nand xperia tipo are enjoying ics bug free! GB is so functionnal however not like the limited wp7!! lol! all apps support till now android froyo because android is really powerful with the best graphic apis ! while ios has a major downgrade in ios 6 and wp8 is useless in midrange like 610 limitations by nokia!!! even wp8 had a good set of features but still uglier than before with differently sized tiles and has nothing better than even a midrange android like sony ericsson live with walkman! Enjoying android! android means real freedoM! no need to break warranty to install uknown sources apps like apk of adobe flash on jellybean or games , and you can design it at your home as you like with your own custom rom!

This is mainly down to the slow role out of jelly bean updates by some manufacturers, and the fact that it is only mainly available on high end handsets that are just being released. This article is quite irrelevant as its obvious really.
