Counterpoint: Mediatek will keep top spot in chip market for 2021

Anonymous, 04 May 2021People need to stop with excuse of monopoly or duopoly.
... moreBut there used to be monopoly in the entry level and midrange for a short while until Redmi chose a Mediatek chipset for the Redmi Note 8 Pro. Mediatek's reputation was tarnished back then when people started believing rumours of sluggishness and overheating. In 2020, Qualcomm raised the prices of Snapdragon 765G and 865 significantly. The excuse made up by people was that 5G was included. Then Dimensity 1000 came, Qualcomm then lowered the price in order to stay competitive.
The flagship market still remains in Qualcomm's territory since when? The S4? Nvidia and TI used to be players in the mobile market but got squashed by Qualcomm. Now Qualcomm is the only American semiconductor company in the smartphone market that allows anyone to use. Exynos could've compete with Qualcomm but only Meizu bought them until the Meizu 15+. There were rumours that Xiaomi would also use it but nope. Didn't happen.
Ever since the Helio X30 fiasco, Mediatek won't be making any flagship chipsets anymore. As for Unisoc, they've only made entry level and midrange chipsets and are usually used in Chinese phones that no one has heard of.
Intel's x86 chipsets just weren't efficient enough to compete with ARM chipsets. When they knew it was a failure, they will never return.

I can't put a custom rom on my redmi note 8 pro. I have tried installing twrp and it's just not having it. Tried flashing the correct rom via fastboot and ADB. Just not happening. My Xiaomi mi 10T lite 5G has no such issue running the Snapdragon 750G. But it's just not working on the redmi note 8 pro running the mediatek Helio G90T. I know that the dimensity chipsets are phenomenal. I had a dimensity 1000 with the Vivo Iqoo Z1 but I gave it to my mom as it's Chinese rom was poor and couldn't put a different rom on it. Until mediatek based phones become more accessible to developers, it's not an easy sell for me.

I can't say I'm surprised to be honest.
MediaTek have improved over the years, perhaps comparing a Dimensity 800 Vs Snapdragon 765G isn't night and day and actually feel very similar in day to day use in terms of perfornance for the largest majority of people buying phones, manufacturers know this.
Even comparing the Dimensity 1200 Vs Snapdragon 888, the generalisation of using the phone for every day use won't be night & day and in all reality a majority of phone users opening there apps such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc aren't going to be disappointed by a Dimensity 1200.
Not that I'm saying the Snapdragon 888 shouldn't exist but personally the pedestal it's put on only pleases the nerds of the industry and consumers who other about the name on the package.

I'd like to see more Unisoc, and hopefully more open software. Linux mainlined or close to mainline phone SoCs are long overdue and necessary to reduce the artificial update limits that phones have.

The story has been repeated.
Just like Intel and AMD
Even Qualcomm and Mediatek.
Same Story, Different Actors

This isn't really all that surprising.
The average number of midrangers or budget phones sold are always greater than the amount of flagships and the mid range and budget sector is dominated by MediaTek chipsets.
The way I see it, the top range expensive flagships will continue using Qualcomm's latest and greatest while the competitively priced flagships and the budget and mid rangers will use MediaTek chipsets to reduce their production costs. We're already seeing it with the Redmi gaming phone using a Dimensity 1200 Chipset.
I'm just happy that finally MediaTek was able to dip into the previously Qualcomm dominated flagship scene. Any sector of any industry with just one major player leads to a monopoly which sets about a certain lax in the innovation and creativity part, I'm not saying Qualcomm Snapdragon processors are not innovative or anything, but what I am saying is that the creativity which comes from completion is far greater than creativity coming from elsewhere.
So as a consumer, ultimately we would be getting aggressively priced flagships which would deliver a bang for buck if MediaTek does start posing a threat to Qualcomm.

Mediatek close to SD 870 level performance with dimensity 1200 with cheaper price. So no big surprise they are rank 1. Now they just need a new flagship processor to match 888.

SMIRNAS, 04 May 2021same old same Qualcomm vs. Mediatek,,
Exynos, Apple and Hi... morePeople need to stop with excuse of monopoly or duopoly.
Apple has no interest in selling their chips. Same applies to Huawei.
The expensive phones have Qualcomm because the OEMs think it is the better chip.
None of them is being forced to purchase from Qualcomm.
Snapdragon 8xx series has the best modem, best ISP, fastest connections, support for higher screen resolutions and high frame rates. It allows phones to use best storage, fastest RAM possible for mobile etc ..
Nothing keeps Mediatek or Unisoc to make high end chips.
Nothing keeps Intel from coming back to mobile chip business.

Anonymous, 04 May 2021I don't get it... This is shocking! What is shocking? That American anti-competitive behaviour has forced a competitor out of the race? Or that MediaTek is beating Qualcomm? Hopefully, that's going to continue.
