    It allows you to build ROM...
    With sources of the soc alone, you can do nothing good.

    Sources are no longer a problem...it was with tiny brands from Shenzhen you had to import.
    Sources are available for absolutely all the devices with Mediatek's from companies like Redmi, Oppo, Realme...and so on...even sources of K40 Game Enhanced Edition released only in China a couple of weeks ago are allready available.
    If you're not lazy, you can find all of these in a couple of minutes.

    The main problem is that Redmi Note 8 Pro is the first best seller with Mediatek's only maybe 20 months ago...when many devs works on Qualcomm's since years.
    Most of european et US devs don't want to change their habits...it's easier to work on a single plateform.
    Xiaomi.eu admits that : they don't want to! That's all!
    Indians work on Mediatek's, but community still has to grown.

    It's easy to understands, the more devs you have, the more ROM you get.

      while nowadays its possible to create custom rom for mediatek phone, but quality of those rom still lag behind compare to other soc.

      and its not hard to understand, the reason is mediatek wont release source code to developers. you can read more here

              Whether there is custom rom support depends on the manufacturer releasing the kernel sources for their phones. Manufacturers that do not allow bootloader unlocking do not often release the kernel sources. Xiaomi, Google and OnePlus do but they do not often release phones with MediaTek processors.

Also, people who want custom ROMs generally don't go for Oppo and Vivo devices.

                          Guess I gotta thank Mediatek for compelling Qualcomm to release the Snapdragon 780G, and in a node that doesn't suck. I like me my custom ROMs tho so no MTK for me.

                                A midrange chip that is the equivalent to SD855 but with updated features and 5G? Sounds good to me.
