Reuters: TSMC may build its advanced 3nm foundry in the US instead of Europe

The EU is more interested in older nodes, which are used by its auto industry.

Zorphick, 15 May 2021Just come to Canada, there is no drought in quebec nor onta... morebullshit to that, stay out of the east and the far west. Central Canada (Manitoba / Saskatchewan) need a boost to their economy more than any other province (maybe not the maritime provinces).

Corporate america stuff. Putting states(in this case countries/continents) to fight against each other and give them more subsidies and tax cuts, because they supposedly bring jobs.

We might as well face it! Moles from the US and China, are in these threads making out how they are acceptable, just like brand marketing moles do.

Not surprised about them going to US, but also not happy.

It would be a good thing if they build a factory in EU, however I bet US was being US and gave them a deal they could not refuse financially (aka financial benefits)

As for EU, EU is being EU and that is it's core problem.

This I say as a EU citizen that sees these issues way too often.

If you aren't a criminal d... moreOkay then let me have your card details, your text messages, your contacts list, and basically your entire phone. You aren't a criminal so of course, that should not be any problem for you, like you said. You shouldn't worry about anything, since you got nothing to hide, not even your privacy where it applies like your personal stuff and etc. According to your logic, it's okay for them to snoop on you as long as you are not a criminal. So going by that logic everyone else that has a problem with it must be a criminal as they got things to hide. Why do you even wear clothes in public ? You aren't a criminal so you don't have to worry about having anything to hide or do you actually have nothing to hide ? In that case it will be a real amusement

USA also doesn't make any of it. They'll just end up shipping the stuff back to China where they'll stick the chips into products and then ship them back to USA. But hey, ecology and global warming and all that stuff.

"that will cost a whopping $23-25 million".

Only $23-25 million. Can I have one.

I'm amazed at how much these things are shrinking compared to what they said they could do. These guys must not have been so smart to get it so wrong.

But silicon is a wastage. Did you know there has long been silicon switching they can pump to 100's of gigahertz. Nobody tells you those things. But if you read electronic engineering mags and science journals, you'll occasionally see such things. But the truth is that, at that speed a chip is going be incredibly hot, as leakage is likely going be through the roof. What they don't tell you, is that these days most of the chips you are familiar with, are over clocked as standard, to get this speeds. If you look at ultra low energy choose, their clocks are a lot slower. What they don't tell you, is that silicon has a natural switching speed and lower energy consumptionat that speed. The low energy chip making processes are also tailored to the low energy and often have been bigger prucesses. Some people I knew, developed a record holding low energy processor in 180nm, but the processor only cycled in the late 600hz. I haven't kept up, but I wonder what GHz and energy consumption it would be like at 2nm? I prefer 5Gz, as a target working speed for various task as the sea of processors designs are suitable to directly handle tasks normally using dedicated chips, like video video compression, USB 4.0, gpu etc.

The guy I knew could switch the transistor at 12 or 5ghz I think 25 years ago. By the time you made the simple chip, the speed dropped down to hundreds of megahertz. 2nm is going be bad compared finding a good replacement, with little leakage. Such chips were to be coming out now, magnetic computing, but conveniently are not. They can use down too something like 1 million times less energy.
