Only external GPU is missing, but it would have added weight AND thickness, so I guess I am fine with no gaming.

I want one for web development and learning computer science and overall hate the way Apple's ecosystem locks you in. So I want to get something like a mac in terms of profitability, screen quality, battery life, and typing smoothness, but I don't want it to run Mac OS. I want it to be windows or linux.

Don’t be fooled by the specs sheet because in real world use the M1 MacBook Air crashes the Mate. Firstly, M1 manages RAM better than traditional PCs, 8GB of RAM on Air is more likely like 16 on Mate. Second, machine learning on Air will speed up frequent routines overtime. The Mate has a traditional, dumb x86 chip that cannot be compared with M1 neural engine. With M1, Apple replicates what it has been doing for some years now on iPhones and iPads: having lower specs compared to Android phones but still performing better in real world use.

I currently have a Huawei Matebook D15 (AMD)
                  It's great overall.
It is soon turning a year old and these are my complaints.
1.Battery life: ITS SOO BAD barely 1 hour of battery life
2.Performance: it's awesome the ryzen5 3500u has great performance but it gets HOT really fast it jumps to 98 degrees celcius pretty fast.
                  3.Display: Amazing that's it
4.Speakers: a bit tinny but sounds good.
                  5.Storage: good enough
6.Mobility: It is light enough for me to carry around with one hand. it fits my 14" backpack greatly.
7.Build Structure: Solid. But the aluminum got warped from the CPU temps
8.Keyboard: Great for typing long essays and general typing.
9.Mics: Very crisp for video calls (google meet/zoom)
10.Overall: Great laptop could last for years.

My experience with eGPUs haven't been the best unfortunately.

I don't build a desktop since I always travel a lot and I don't like gaming laptops because of the bulk. Even having a portable display can be quite cumbersome. Having a light ultrabook laptop with a Thunderbolt connection allows me to use the GPU when I need it. When I'm done with it, I just unplug it and use the laptop as usual without worrying about the weight. It was because of the eGPU that I sold off my gaming desktop rig.

Ryzen.... old technology chip compared to M1. Just try to open a couple of apps and you will hear the fan. M1 has set the new standards of what intel and AMD should do in the future. In the meanwhile enjoy the fan noise, heat and low performance on battery.

Anonymous, 21 May 2021I'd rather have something more premium like a Matebook... moreIf you think an eGPU is a good choice or good value you're kidding yourself, at that point just buy or build a mini ITX machine along with a portable display. Honestly, eGPUs are usually really bad value for money (as you also need a few hundred pound enclosure added to the the price of the graphics card), especially since the MacBook is already £2000 and do not give the performance that they should at all because of the lower TDP, especially when gaming, you will see much lower FPS. Even when not gaming, you are still seeing an up to 30% decrease in performance over the normal card. Just splurge that £2500 you need on a MacBook Pro and an eGPU for a pretty maxed out mini ITX PC and a decent portable display, you won't regret it.

YUKI93, 21 May 2021AMD CPUs never been able to support Thunderbolt connection ... moreI know, that's why I said "(even though it was expected) no TB4". Though most other companies make up for it by pairing it with GTX/RTX series Nvidia GPU. This one solely relies on its weak iGPU to perform all the graphically intensive tasks, which limits the target audience to casual/business users.
