Could we see the 108MP sensor make its way to non-Samsung phones?

Better to make and use an 12mp with 2.4micromm photo diodes

YUKI93, 25 May 2021I thought the ISOCELL HM2 sensor is for the OEMs? Sure that... moreYeah, the HM2 doesn't seem to perform that well though from what I have seen of online reviews. Also the first Dxomark score was released for a phone with a HM2 sensor and whilst good for a midranger and for the price it is not really doing better than even some midrange phones with imx586 sensors along with OIS. The top current sensors with pixel binning seem to still be the 48-50 mp ones with large sensor size and large pixels.

this 108mp number is such a big marketing gimmick. imagine putting 108 megapixels just to output 12mp is ridiculous and sad.

its sad that 12mp became the standard output for all smartphones today, as back in the days rgb bayers with 20 or 23mp sensors were already enough as they have so much detail.

ever since they made quad-bayers, samsung knew that megapixel race will fool a lot of people. and there it is, a lot of people were already fooled, even the mi 11 ultra with less 58 megapixels than the s21 ultra takes better pictures (due to the sensor size)

i'd rather have four rgb bayer sensors (25/20mp main with sensor size of 1/1.40 or 1/1.30", 20mp ultrawide, 12mp telephoto and 12mp long telephoto) instead of quad-bayers.

its such a big gimmick that a lot of people already got fooled by it. sad as hell.

AnonD-994853, 25 May 2021Then why did lowlight videos are still noisy, dark, and sof... moreI'd rather have a large sensor with a large pixel size in the first place. The only reason why I would want a camera sensor with a high megapixel on a smartphone is because of the 8K video recording. But that has never been my concern in the first place, so I'd rather have something like the 1" RGB 20MP camera sensor as in the Panasonic Lumix CM1 and the Sharp Aquos R6. That makes much more sense to me.

notafanboy, 25 May 2021108MP is a gimmick, but it sounds more impressive than &quo... moreThat's true, but even other companies that usually go for "numbers" (more mpx) are going for just better sensor with less mpx (e.g. Xiaomi with its Mi 11 Ultra) they could have done exactly the same with the S21s

NBMSCH, 25 May 2021I can be a better photographer with just 12MP sensor!! Meg... moreI can believe that. It's about the physical sensor size, pixel size, aperture, and depth-of-filed. Computational photography alone doesn't do enough justice, hardware physics is still relevant. That is why even a five-year-old 12MP or 16MP APS-C and Full Frame DSLR or Mirrorless camera can still take much better photo quality than a smartphone with software-focused Quad Bayer or Nona Bayer sensor.

I thought the ISOCELL HM2 sensor is for the OEMs? Sure that it has a smaller 1/1.52" sensor size and 0.7µ pixel size compared to the HM3's 1/1.33" 0.8µ pixel, but the HM2 does have the same 9-in-1 Nonapixel binning capability just like in the HM3.

I can be a better photographer with just 12MP sensor!! Megapixel counts is the last thing i'm thinking about in photography!

Then why did lowlight videos are still noisy, dark, and soft? There is no sensor improvements like i expect. Even Note 20 Ultra with HM1 sometimes have better dynamic range than this. It is a shame that samsung uses the 108 mp on its ultra phones. Why not use the Samsung GN1 or GN2. 50 Mp are better at lowlight. The maim camera at lowlight arr basically bad. Without night mode, photos are soft, dark, noisy. Even Iphone 12 Pro Max, Oneplus 9 Pro takes better lowlight photos and videos in auto mode.

For the bad lowlight performance for all lens in auto mode both photoa and videos. i disagree with most people calling s21 ultra the best flagship camera. Vivo X60 Pro Plus is still the best camera in my opinion. It has far superior lowlight photos and videos in all lens except for selfie. Samsung only wins in daytime colours and selfies.

I don't understand why samsung keeps using the bad 108 MP camera. Why not just opt for samsung gn1 and gn2 sensor
