Anonymous, 31 May 2021Ask OnePlus or Huawei P40 Pro users. They do want in-screen... moreYou cannot have sided finger scanner with curved screen.
There is no space for the button.

Nobody asked for in-screen. People just accept it is there.
Nobody asked the jack to be removed, just tolerate it is missing.

Funny the fact other brands are not bashed by sided finger scanner (many chinese phones, motorola, samsung phones/tablets, ipad air), not for using 25:9 or 29:9 screen.

They advertise screen as main point of the phone.
They do not want uneven quality across screen because finger scanner.
Other brands do not care, otherwise they would not ruin screen by using curved sides, notch or hole.

Anonymous, 31 May 2021There are plenty of excellent smartphones with fast in-scre... moreIt's because they are just getting better. No, wait, let me rephrase that. They're simply getting to the point where they could match the speed and accuracy of physical scanners, but with a higher price of course.

Those phones that you said were cheap? Obviously they har to cut corners in some ways. For one, the phone didn't even undergo the proper rigorous water resistance test as this Xperia did. Also, the UFS 3.1 storage that's used in those cheap phones aren't as fast and as good as what's used on mainstream flagships. Heck, the UFS 2.1 on this Xperia might even be faster or just equally as fast as those UFS 3.1 on cheap phones.

As for the Xperia 1 III, the extra price hike goes mostly to the 4K HDR 120Hz display and the variable periscope zoom lens, which are NOT cheap to produce btw. Still, the $1300 already can give you the 256GB model of that phone while $1400 on the S21 Ultra only gives you the 128GB with no memory expandability option.
If the 1 III is going to be more expensive than the S21 Ultra, it surely has every right to do so, as it also offers significantly more features that are essential to the users. Headphone jack, no display cutout, dual front-facing stereo speakers, fast charger included inside the box, professional level of camera controls, no curved display, industry-standard 21:9 ratio, and some other great features as well.
Still, it is cheaper and offers more. It definitely isn't an outdated phone for sure just because of the physical fingerprint scanner.

It also isn't hitting the shelves yet because of the current situation. You know, Sony's Mobile Division is struggling even if they're doing much better every year, so they can't meet their customers' demand as easily as Samsung and Apple can. Either way, that's no longer relevant to the main topic of physical vs in-display fp scanners, so why even bring that up?

Anonymous, 31 May 2021Never came across of a failed in-screen fingerprint sensor.... moreMi11 and Mi10 uses same main camera.
Vivo uses GN1 like last year.
              Asus still has imx686.
              OnePlus is again using Imx689.

Z1, Z2, Z3 and Z4 had same camera. They do not perform same.
Z5, X Perf and XZ share the camera.
XZ1, XZ2 and XZ3 same, do not perform equal.

Just the new ISP from new CPU already changes results.

              Also , sony does the same for their 📷 (A7r2/A7r3, A9/A9ii, A6300/6500/6600).
Many of them use same sensor for more than 1 generation.
Some tweaks at circuit levels can be done and change outcome.

No phone nor camera uses sensor at 100% of its potential.
              CPUs are always bottleneck.
Pointless to get new sensor if specs are exactly the same.

Someone on reddit said couple weeks ago about talking to retailer in Sweden.
                  Answer was end of August.
But pre-order in Russia was first to open.

Some of Sony suppliers are having issues to deliver the amount of components they wanted to deliver. Components used by flagships.

I am surprised Sony has not made event in Taiwan already for 1 iii. Just 10iii.
In 2020, 30% of phones sold for more than US$700 there were Xperia.

Broken screen is still dominant modern smartphones issue, trust me. Yes using the same main camera sensor will unlikely bring any noticeable benefits (Google proved it many times:)). Hence Xperia 1 III 20% price hike is questionable. In my country I can get used, in excellent condition Huawei P40 Pro for $400 with main camera sensor bigger than on upcoming Xperia 1 III and excellent periscope telephoto camera. That's an example of absolutely justifiable price!

                      Accept.

Ask the owners of S10e if they wanted the in-screen instead.
                      They do not.

                        Just waste of money.

                        Mi11 uses HMX from 2019.
                        Photos are excelent.
                        Better than Mi 11 Ultra.
S21 Ultra samples are worse than S20 Ultra, with newer HM3.

If Pixel 5 had another 12MP 1/2.6" , it would not do better than using imx363.

Also, in-screen FPs is integrated to screen. If it stops working, you need to pay for another screen as well.

His retail unit has arrived. According to him, there is no heat issues, yes the 120Hz increases power use a lot, auto mode chooses to use HDR more often.
