Counterpoint: Half of mid-rangers sold in Europe support 5G, but Huawei's departure increased prices

15 July 2021
Sub-$250 Huaweis were strong sellers, but the company's departure left a void that was filled with pricier devices.

My 2015 flagship, on Exynos 7420, basically refuses to run anything starting 2 years ago, its lag would render it unusable even if I closed all background apps except the keyboard(if you tweak a setting in developer mode to be aggressive enough it could lead to the keyboard terminating itself) the lag would be unusable, like loading/freezes for nearly a minute in a basic messaging app like Wechat. Currently I regard SD835 to be the bare minimum, it would run most apps, with a somewhat tolerable lag, but YMMV, some people claim a midrange from 5 years ago runs perfectly fine, that's never been the case from my experience.

They look at a phone and unless it has a SD8xx processor in it then it's utter trash. That isn't true though as a lot of mid range devices are decent performers for their price

A Huawei P40 Lite here costs $150 -> camera results are on-part with an iPhone X at a fraction of the price, with significantly better battery life.

An old flagship phone is better than a new midrange phone ONLY in specific use cases - people need to pick that which fits their own needs, not the one someone else things they need.

mandalaphone, 17 Jul 2021Obviously you've never used a midrange Huawei.I've never used any midrange. I use flagships, the latest flagships in the past but now no longer necessary. Old flagships inherently have better value than new midrange.
Anyhow that's beside the point. Most review sites with proper methodology like GSMA and Notebookcheck will tell you the same, that some Xiaomi/Redmi has notably better value than a Huawei in the same price range.

Of course, this has got to do with Huawei's demise with the ban. As this created a void where Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Realme and OnePlus will fill. The biggest loser of course is Huawei. In my home country, the philippines, even Tecno, which only came in last year, already has beaten Huawei in terms of market share. That's what Huawei is now.

Victor Sol, 15 Jul 2021You see now they where supporting US ban now we all see the... moresuffer how? Huawei is a small player in USA market before the ban. china have no issue with monopoly, why could USA be the same.

new phone expensive? just buy the previous generation used or new. you get better price/value for andriod phone since they drop price fast.

The market is better off without CCP's beloved company. This is just another manipulating article, meant to please all the Chinese shills present in this comment section (which I'm 100% sure they're as real as those bots from Twitter that posted Huawei propaganda). Also, prices weren't affected at all. And Huawei didn't release a decent sub-300$ since 2017-2018. There's Xiaomi, Motorola, Nokia that can fulfil the need for mid-rangers.

I would say a thousand times that 5G is a total gimmick, at least for years to come.
And Xiaomi on average has far lower prices than Huawei, Huawei's non-flagships are known for very poor value(many Nova devices), so whatever the reason for this trend it's not them.

Having only Samsung, Apple and Xiaomi as important manufacturers, will make prices go higher and innovation and excitement lower.
