The US placed Huawei onto their entity list which forbids businesses from supplying goods that contains US technology to Huawei unless they're licensed to do so. The US blocked TSMC (A Taiwanese company) from supplying chips to Huawei because the manufacturing process uses some US patented technology (Don't ask me which ones. I don't know). The only company that has received a licence to sell chips to Huawei is Qualcomm (A Huawei competitor in both 5G and smartphone chipsets) and it appears that they are not permitted to sell 5G compatible chips to Huawei. The SD888 they are selling to Huawei are not 5G enabled.

Sorry I seem to have missed something on the article, why 4G now? And I thought the 888 is a 5G chipset.

As someone who has decades in Telecoms, I would agree that Huawei doesn’t spy. That would be the most foolhardy, crazy thing they could do. All eyes are on them currently and if they were to slip even once, the media, foreign governments and security establishments would be all over them crying “I told you so”.

What they do do however is far more clever than that. We *suspect* (we don’t know for sure, but given the attacks from various APT groups in China, targeting the correct IP address, correct port, no mistakes, so there is obviously the knowledge there to do it, is that Huawei supplies the network topology to their MSS handlers who then distribute it on to the various APT actors who are responsible for the penetration.
Huawei stays clean, and even with a small presence in a network, they know a HUGE amount about that network, the routers, secGWs, MMEs etc as parts of it are n a pooled configuration, along with core network endpoints, they know it all.

This was the last step in the restrictions. Prior to that it just restricted non-US manufacturers such as TSMC from building any products for Huawei and Hisilicon if they used American equipment. Qualcomm applied for a license and got the license to supply 4g chips only
