I didn't have this one, but the 808 PV. It's incredible (not really) how trash are the current phones at rendering fine details like leaves, grass, etc. Even the 1020, which wasn't as good as the 808PV is way better than phones like my S21 Ultra at stuff like that.

Nokia-level hardware but with all software and AI trickery of today would be reigning supreme.

[deleted post]Huawei and Xiaomi did a total 180 degree change in their image processing recently (huawei a bit back) and now they are actually good. Your information is basically stereotype now.

reviewers should really take this phone out for professional photography, since xiaomi keeps on marketing this as "tHe pHoNe wItH tHe LarGeSt cAmErA sEnSoR"

like for professional, or dslr style portraits, as i'm tired of seeing what they only do for everyday photography, while not matching actual cameras, or professional cameras, we might wanna see the power of computational photography with the mi 11 ultra.

Well no phone released this year can be good enough competitor to MI 11 Ultra. Maybe P50 pro will be equal but nothing and nobody else.
All other phones and brands are left very far behind.

Xiaomi's image processing evolved a ton from last year and now I would say they're on par with or ever so slightly behind Google and Huawei in this regard.

Anonymous, 26 Jul 2021Maybe the only thing that is near to the camera quality and... moreXperia series have a dedicated-camera-like camera app UI but with a regular phone sensor and a rather typical smartphone image processing whereas Nokia 808 and Lumia 1020 both had a massive sensor (back then) but also came with a relatively basic UI. They are no way comparable to each other.

So it's mostly the same story as 808 PureView vs Mi 11 Ultra but with some minor differences then. Lumia 1020 fixes the underexposure issue of 808PV and shows significant improvement in low light but at the same time has more "processed" look to it, making its outputs a bit more comparable to Mi 11 Ultra in many cases.

L1020 wins out when it comes to full resolution photos shot in well lit scenes (an area where phones with QB sensor traditionally weren't great at - except for recent Huawei flagships), but performs considerably worse while using 5MP PV mode than M11U because downsampling naturally leads to loss of finest details as well.

What surprised me is that L1020 seems to like pumping up blue tones lot higher than Mi11U. L1020's photos are no way means oversaturated, but to say that they have more natural colour rendition like some people are suggesting in the comment section is simply disingenuous.

Mi11U still reigns supreme in low light and highly likely would've comfortably beaten L1020 even without night mode or in full resolution mode. I would also say RAW is more usable in Mi11U across all sorts of different lighting scenario - L1020 shows more noise, its highlight recovery is much more limited and the banding at high ISO makes it practically useless for low light shooting.

For a 2013 phone running on an ancient OS, I would say Lumia 1020 did put up an admirable fight against over one of the best cameraphone in 2021. It definitely aged much better than people had expected back then, that's for sure.

As with the 808 the Lumia detail rendering is way more natural and doesn't have that processed look like modern flagships.

                                      Not bad for 8 years.

While with a good cameraphone you just point and shoot and get solid images. I stopped using my RX100 Mk III once I got the Huawei P20 Pro.
The use scenarios where it offered a notable advantage over something I always have in my pocket were too few.
I still use Alpha 7 Mk. III for serious photography, though.
