Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G and Z Fold3 5G will be IPX8 rated

22 July 2021
That means they'll withstand water but haven't been tested for dust.

Don't bother the phone having no better dust protection. You can just wash your phone to clear the dust away then dry it. 😎👌

The Fold 2 was shown to be water resistant by a youtuber. I think Samsung didn't want to certify it until they did more testing because it means Samsung takes responsibility if something goes wrong. Similarly the Fold 3 is probably dust resistant as well, but they will keep testing until they feel comfortable enough to stand behind the certification.

I believe the consumer is always going to be 1-2 generations behind on the Folding tech Samsung has. This gives them an opportunity to keep testing and they can recover their R&D costs by slowly rolling out the tech. If you think Samsung has not figured out a way to put the pen inside the phone, your kidding yourselves. When they do it next year or the following year it will grab the attention of more consumers.

The just put barrier after the hinge so that water doesn't go inside. I don't understand why the f**ck these people think a foldable or flip phone can't be IP 8 level water resistant !

This is a pretty big deal for a foldable device.

im kinda excited, samsung stop hyping me with these shiny features!

sprayable coating was initial option for water resistant mobile devices.
so its not new to do sprayable coating for water resistant. in fact, this is better use for foldable devices.

At the point manufacturers started lowering the battery capacity in order to push the ultra fast charging numbers (looking at you, BBK), the companies should stop thinking if they could, and start thinking if they should.

Pretty impressive engineering success by Samsung tbh... Budget Chinese companies like Xiaomi or Realme weren't able to release a commercial version of a foldable phone and Samsung is already water-tightening them.

We will see how long it will take before Chinese steal the know how, it would be nice to have a budget-friendly IP-rated foldable phone.

Due to the inertia of water vs air. 😁 But then again, IP ratings aren't really there as a seal of approval to use it for diving.
