Shanti Dope, 30 Jul 2021Tbh, I don't even think there's a need for A15 Bi... moreThat's some interesting nonsense. You must be smoking some really good stuff.
4nm is a half node improvement so even it Apple would port the M1 to this node it would still use too much power for a smartphone SOC. The A14 is already throttling quite fast and not by a little.
The realistic expectation is that A15 will improve CPU performance by 10-15%. That's what the new manufacturing process will allow.

I'm 100% sure that it's just a overclocked version of the sd 888 and sd 888+. Legit It will make the phone hotter than a volcano I hate sd now.

OhNom, 30 Jul 2021Unfortunately, or I think no one is going to run like crazy... moreIt's not a well known thing, but these days if chip can run cooler it can actually hit higher clocks consistently and thus actually perform better. Great example are Ryzen 5000 chips on desktops. Just giving it all the power it'll ever need through Precision Boost Overdrive basically does nothing because thermal limits always keep it back. You can leave it all stock and just cool it way better and it'll have much more consistent clocks that go consistently higher. Another example is if you underclock it, it'll actually clock higher in general because temperatures will be lower and it'll be allowed to clock higher as a result. Mobile chips are even more biased towards thermal control as it's hard to actively cool them unlike in PC's.
So, my guess is that making current SD 888 just more power efficient would naturally boost the performance as it would much easier consistently hit higher clocks. And given that people know how hot SD888 is, they'd appreciate it being more power efficient and still be like 5-10% better at the same time.

AnonD-1003038, 30 Jul 2021The A14 is technically just a cut down version of M1. Thing... moreUnfortunately, or I think no one is going to run like crazy just because a chip has 30% less consumption, they just want to see the benchmarks and that the processor of your phone has 200K than that of your friend or your old phone, you can call it placebo plus more power never hurts but i think they should make one more version of 888, an 888 lite focused on power, 888 normal, and classic 888+, when we get to a point where you can use your phone in daylight complete without worrying about the battery we would be perfect, they could forget about the efficiency and all the I+D to power, but we are not at that point

AnonD-1003038, 30 Jul 2021The A14 is technically just a cut down version of M1. Thing... moreI agree as well, but unfortunately, most consumers would not buy a new device (spend money) if it was only more power efficient.
Therefore, manufacturers have a financial incentive to make their devices faster if they want to convince consumers to spend money to upgrade their devices.

AnonD-1003038, 30 Jul 2021The A14 is technically just a cut down version of M1. Thing... moreQualcomm probably doesn't know (yet) how to fix the new chip by making it use less power and generate less heat.
But to stay relevant they come with this, reminds me of some mistakes Intel and AMD made in the past, they could not make their current chips much better, so to stay relevant they brought out a CPU that was totally useless but scored suberb in benchmarks only.

Anonymous, 30 Jul 2021If so why don't they have 1gb cacahe and call it a day... moreBecause the cache is built within CPU itself which has very limited surface area and caches (especially L3) tend to be very large in size physically. You cannot make a CPU that is 5x5cm in size, especially for mobile devices where space is luxury you don't have. CPU's in phones are very tiny and you just can't fit such huge cache in them. And just cache size isn't everything, you also need good logic that manages data in it. There is no point in having masive cache if all it does is stores stale data that needs to be flushed constantly and replaced with new data. That's called cache misses and every time it happens you're wasting valuable nanoseconds.

The heating (when due to clock speed) is not the fault of the Soc maker but the phone manufacturer the phone decides how much to use and when, so overheating is a decision made by the phone's software, that's why I love my Blackshark, I can choose how much of the CPU is used.
