It means there is no colour filter on the pixel.

By having 16 pixels in one, they average out the noise to lower differences frame to frame. Seems counter intuitive, but it apparently does work pretty well. The old Nokia did this.

Kodak had this out a long time ago. It was meant to help out low light, but using highlight recovery technique, you get multiple exposure on a range of impure colours, hopefully giving some colour to highlights before they burn out. Red and green over lap a lot, green blue overlaps a lot, and red blue very little. White is everything. So, when recreating the missing colours at the sensor pixel, you get an shot at an extra three exposures, improving dynamic range. On pro cinema camera software they use this with clouds, to get extra detail out. By using a ND on one of more pixels, you can increase this again. So, clear white will blow out your highlights, but a ND grey white, will extend it. As we have good low light ability, it wouldn't surprise if this white pixel was a darker ND (grey) pixel to get your increased highlights, as I think Sony has been offering for years. But, one cinema camera manufacturer I know, rejected this sort of pixel arrangement fur image quality reasons. An 8k development camera from another manufacturer used it, and I could see the white pattern showing up in the image as different exposed pixels. I don't see this as a problem on a phone. If you use correct handling it will either not be there or be small a lot of the time. What is Samsung trying to achieve here? They reportedly get 16 stops from intra pixel HDR techniques, which is great. However, they might get better low noise without that technique. But, stuff extra extra low light on a phone compared to good colour and exposure. If only we could match what we see low light with low noise, like some of the techniques which deep field Astro camera technologies could do!

SuuperBaka, 02 Aug 2021That sensor is most likely gonna be really bad depending on... moreI so agree with you. It's going to have high number of pixel binning involved like the current HM3 and HM2 108MP sensor anyway. If Samsung is still banking on 12MP resolution, I can definitely say that this 200MP sensor will be a 16-to-1 pixel binning type. I'd rather take a native non-binned RGB sensor with a large native pixel size in the first place. The only reason why I would want a three-digit pixel binning camera sensor is because of 8K video, which is something I'm not that bothered tbh.

The addition of White colour array should be interesting for highlights and HDR rendition, though I wouldn't expect this 50MP sensor to be a native non-binned Bayer type like the 13MP camera sensor in the Huawei P8. I'm pretty sure this would be a Tetracell Quad Bayer sensor.

BEX44, 02 Aug 2021I'm curious about the 200MP sensor thoThat sensor is most likely gonna be really bad depending on how big it is. It's not worth using that 200MP sensor for anything other than marketing reasons.

This sensor seems like a much better option instead
