Basically it's just a point-and-shoot camera. With good angle, good lighting, you can achieve good quality photograph, and you don't expect too much to meet the professional standard. But with android in it you can have tons of feature that no ordinary camera can offer, such as better connectivity, better multimedia, games, and much more. It's all OK except for the price off course.
As it for me, I already have an android phone, so if I was into buying a $6xx camera, would spend my money to camera like Alpha NEX series, with better sensor, higher dynamic range, more photographic functions (like AEB and so on), and most importantly (for me) interchangeable lens. Samsung also has similar cameras if you are indeed a Samsung fanatic.

I don't see why any camera enthusiast would buy this instead of the PureView 808 behemoth ? What advantages does this offer , seeing that the prices are about the same ?

Anonymous, 05 Nov 2012Well there is an alternative - its been around for a while ... moreOh and camera features and specs are better on galaxy too. Better zoom, larger screen, bigger internal memory and remote viewfinder that allows any android to control it from a distance.

Anonymous, 05 Nov 2012Well there is an alternative - its been around for a while ... moreThe problem with Nikons android camera is that only the camera function or the android function can run at once whereas the galaxy camera allows you to use the android platform as the camera menu itself so therefore is way ahead in functionallity. This means you can use android apps for taking pics but you cannot do this on the nikon. Not to mention a much newer android version and much better for editing and sharing.

Well, this is a camera, not a phone, Samsung paste a S3 behind it, is to let us edit or share our photo on the go, and probably provide us with more storage( cloud based ). But I do wondering about the battery life of it.

A phone is a phone so let the camera be a camera. It's Samsung way of trying to top many segments ad possible while the hype exist.

They are gonna kill the segment with such overpricing. Did it REALLY need Galaxy S3 Specs??? I think they will sell a few, maybe we will see a second version, but they have effectively killed this segment by coming in TOO HIGH.

Phonenab, 05 Nov 2012Do not know how well this will go, I guess only time will show.My thoughts exactly. Samsung could have given the Lumia920 a real run for its money by including a phone in this, too bad!

WD, 05 Nov 2012Again, thanks for sharing. If I may ask this, are you goin... moreI think your comparing this galaxy camera to a phone, it's meant to compete with other small compact cameras. So this is just as practical to your normal small compact cameras but with extra features. If we are talking about camera wise compared to 808, question to ask would be which has faster shutter speed? filters and effects? low light or night mode? battery life? memory storage? questions like that. Also would u trust a phone like the 808 in terms of battery life when your out hiking or visifing places for a few days and there's happen to be no power supply nearby? You would think this galaxy camera would last longer since u also plan to use the 808 as a phone.

this is a ridiculous phone; nokia pureviews are better, DSLRs are better than pureviews, and iphone 5 is better than DSLRs, so plenty of better options.

Anonymous, 05 Nov 2012I don't know many phones apart from the Motorola Razer Maxx... moreAgain, thanks for sharing.
If I may ask this, are you going to carry this camera all day with you? This is the part I meant by not practical. If I can't carry it all day to be ready for that sudden funny thing my 2-yrs daughter or silly singing my son makes then it is as good as a $2000 camera that was there on the shelf when it was time to capture the moment (useless regardless of how good the specs are since it wasn't there).
When I noted that Nokia did well with the 808 was mainly for this point, it is a good mobile that has a camera you wouldn't mind using it for that sudden special moment when it happens. I don't remember who said that, but I read an interview once and whoever was being interviewed was asked about the best camera he recommends, his reply was simple "the one you have it in your pocket when you need to take the picture" :-)
This one on the other hand, is good in terms of specs having the addition of the data connectivity, but still it is a camera that you "plan" to take it in advance waiting for the moment to use it, just like any SLR, DSLR (I'm not that aware of the types).
With the loads of innovations Samsung has made lately (namely in the S3 and Note 2), I think I have set my expectations high for this one and that's where I feel a bit un-impressed with it. But I do agree that only time will tell when it comes to live and people start using it.
One last note (sorry for the long write up), I'm using the RAZR MAXX too and it easily lasts 48 hrs between charges, my iPhone 4S is less than 24, Blackberry 9860 30-40 hrs and N8 is similar to Blackberry. I had the older RAZR before the MAXX and it used to last about 35 hrs. My use in all of them is almost the same, 3 email accounts with around 2-3 hrs talk, about 1 hr texting and 1-2 hrs web surfing. Camera (still or video) is just on as-needed when there's something worth using as well as music player. That's why I noted that most mobiles break the 24 hr run. :-)
And if you are interested on how I got these numbers, I used to set the stop watch on every time I remove the mobile phone from the charger and check the reading when it's time to charge again, because to me, I could live without so many options in the mobile phone EXCEPT not being able to make it through the day (unfortunately I'm stuck with the iPhone because I got it on contract, unlike the others).

WD, 05 Nov 2012Thank you very much for the reply, but honestly this doesn'... moreI don't know many phones apart from the Motorola Razer Maxx that can last 1 full day with camera, data and internet usage. This is also Samsung's first android camera, they don't need to add every feature to it or else it would be harder for them to improve the next generation galaxy camera, maybe the next galaxy camera would add voice call but I doubt it because Samsung made this more of a camera then a phone. This camera is innovative and practical well for me anyways, as it is relatively new technology where everything you need most such as camera, internet and apps are all in one device. It's basically a big step in new technology for cameras, just like normal phones turning into smartphones.I guess the galaxy camera can be called a 'smart camera'. Like I said this camera is not for everyone, just because you don't find it innovative and practical it doesn't mean it's the same for other people.
Time will tell until good reviews will come out and you can decide for yourself.

Anonymous, 05 Nov 2012Because this is meant to be a camera, not a phone but you c... moreThank you very much for the reply, but honestly this doesn't sound even close to practical... There are several solutions to this issue. But what is confusing me (as this is coming from Samsung, and to make it clear, I am a BIG fan for their latest trends in making good things better), since there is already an OS, excellent hardware, and data support... Was it really hard to add the voice call to it? I can't find a logic to that... I have camera with WiFi which is ok as there aren't the other requirements to make a mobile camera, but this one has it all, and it's coming from Samsung, so if anyone can do it, they sure can do it too, and make it better.
I don't want to sound attacking, but honestly this is by far an innovation or even a good idea. Any mobile phone will stand for at least one full day under hard use (sure I'm not talking here about iPhone or LG) so the point of having mobile out of battery while I need to take a picture and upload it is unlikely to happen. In this battle, I believe that Nokia still managed to come with a better solution (I wouldn't call it innovation) in the 808 which holds middle ground, not the best OS around, but sure not a bad one, and the camera is way above any other mobile phone camera (and a handfull of point & shoot cameras). To me, this is a translation to "practical" solution that I'd have loved (and still love) to see it from Samsung. I'm sure they'll come up with something to be in line with the quality of S3 and Note 2 but in a form of a mobile camera (a real one, not this one).
Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts.
