Oppo unveils 85-200mm continuous zoom lens, RGBW sensor for smartphones

RGBW colour filter is interesting. I'm not entirely sure how it will handle full resolution shots (maybe perform binning on the colour component and then uses pansharpening to blow up the image to full resolution?), but no array conversion *should* mean at least they will be relatively artifact free compared to those from Quad Bayer/Tetracell sensors. Low light performance should be greatly improved as well, though Vivo's numbers look quite a bit off and are underestimating the actual amount of light intake, frankly speaking.
Finally we're getting a continuous zoom in modern smartphones! Asus' implementation on OG Zenfone Zoom wasn't great because the mechanism was built onto the main camera (which was the only camera on the phone) resulting in smaller aperture and poorer low light photos, but Oppo's implementation gets around this issue by turning it into a dedicated telephoto module which is separate from the main camera. A dual FL tele lens showed some seriously promising results on Xperia 5 III (though 1 III disappointed people), and here I'm hoping that Oppo will get the lens quality right with this one.
The new generation stabilisation system is also intriguing - correct me if I'm not understanding it correctly, but is it basically hybrid OIS + IBIS? If so I'm definitely interested to see how well it performs when it comes to the video recording.

Anonymous, 19 Aug 2021"continuous optical zoom" One doesn't need ... moreThe issue is that the mainstream have associated "zoom" with "telephoto/magnification", so in order to clarify what we talk about, we are forced to use "continuous".

[deleted post]WRGB sensors and zoom lens have have around for mobile for years.
It was just matter of using or not based on many factors.
Asus had 24-80mm years ago, they never got credits for it

Cool! Things like this are needed. Otherwise the big boys will continue with their sleep. These will wake them up for sure.

"uses a 4-in-1 pixel binning "
Oppo didn't really say that. They were talking about a "Quadra pixel binning algorithm", which has been embedded in the sensor.
It's not really clear whether they use analog binning or digital binning. Maybe it's a combination of both. The improvement of the signal to noise ratio (35%) isn't huge. The sensor captures 60% more light, but in exteme low-light conditions the advantage will be only as if the sensor captures 35% more light.

Anonymous, 19 Aug 2021Sony still provides dim display making tons of Xperia users... moreThere are some people who are saying that the display isn't totally unusable in sunlight. Dim, but still usable for the most part.
How about complaints regarding screen burn? I could easily find forums talking about it on Samsung and Apple's pages, but I could hardly see anyone complain about it on Sony.

My definition of it is something that is overly sharpened and oversaturated photos that heavily rely on extreme processing to fool users into thinking that there's actually more detail into them even if there really isn't.
Shots from the Xperia 1 III are something that are similar to what proper digital cameras will produce, whereas others like the Mi 11 Ultra can be easily recognized as "smartphone" shots rather than a proper digital camera.

Let me guess vivo x70 pro+ will be first with rgbw sensor and find x4 pro will get that continuous zoom lens at least that's what i am hoping for since x3 had average telephoto

Yeah but their implementation succkd!! The image quality out of those was just terrible.
Even MI 11 ultra with digital zoom was beating them at 2.7x optical

Sony had white pixel for screen to make it brighter,
And Sony announced RGBW sensor in 2012 (but there is said Kodak has patent for that)
No actual breakthrough, but nice improvements, and think Oppo will be first to show something actually

Hope they will replace all camera modules with one periscope for all zoom levels and for front and main camera with switchable prism. It is not normal Honor Magic3 Pro+ is having 7!! camera modules (TOF included), total 255+MP!!

Listen gsmarena team oppo is exactly saying we can expect a production device with continuous zoom in an actual production device
From what I gather commercial availability will be in Q4 this year
Plus this is China we are talking about they don't play around with making concept smartphones & features into reality

"continuous optical zoom"
One doesn't need to use the word "continuous" because zoom lens always means continuous. Smartphone cameras don't have zoom lenses, they have tele prime lenses. A common misunderstanding by the media.

The zoom will be interesting and seems to be something genuinely new. The 5 axis OIS seems to be similar to Vivos solution. The UDC selfie cam tech is basically developed by Huaxing optoelectronics or Visionox like as in the Axon 30 or mix 4 or possibly Samsung if they go for Samsung screens. The smartphone companies are just developing algorithms for the selfie cam to work better. Wonder about the camera sensor. Assume Sony, Samsung or Omnivision will develop and produce it but perhaps Oppo participated in the design a bit like the RYYB sensors for Huawei
