It remains to be seen just how this feature will be implemented.

Read the source article. It seems that this Kuo guy speculated a lot. It's extremely unlikely that there will be no additional costs. Also, the voice will be delayed, right? If you make a phone call using a LEO satellite network, the voice will have to go through the satellite network first and then to the cellular network. The voice from the other end will go through a cellular network first and then to the satellite network. If the voice is delayed, it'll be very annoying to use.

I doubt that network operators will do this for free.

Even low orbit satellites, do you know how much more energy the will need for this communication? Usually your antennas are at worst couple of kilometers away from you. Usually 1km or less.

            Thats interesting!

Anonymous, 30 Aug 2021And, with that, big tech will control all data, normal netw... moreIsn't it already like this? You have Apple and Google in USA (and pretty much entire world really). And of regular cell providers you have Verizon and T-Mobil. And that's about it as far as USA goes. There are bunch of small ones who probably lease their infrastructure anyway. If you're worried about few entities controlling all data, we're already long past that point.

Even with services like ProtonMail which are focused on privacy, they often have to depend on infrastructure provided by these giants to avoid censorship or control. In ProtonMail's case that's Google's DNS. They are so big no one can afford to block them. Or block GMail. It's regular occurence with ProtonMail where services just block it or authoritarian countries restrict access to it. So, being big and control almost entir world is bad, but also good in some cases for certain things.

Oh wow, one step closer to Skynet!

The 11 pro max took the crown on battery last year

for those of you wondering,i'll put it in simple terms........this is going to mean that the new iphones are not going to need always have a connection to your local carrier(or internet service provider, for that matter.)and can connect to the internet or www. and send electromagnetic signals(which is what gives you texts, calls and radio)in out of cover areas, via satellites connectivity.(kinda like how live telecasts work).
                                    BUT THE BIG QUESTION IS
how are they going to implement it? this tech is nothing new,but it will mark the first time a mass market company offer this tech in consumer grade devices!
and what's more?it's rumored to be apple!
there are some reasons why it seems fishy,
                                    1.this needs patenting.A LOT.and for a consumer grade device,i don't see the hurry(especcially for a corp like apple).
2.this rumor is coming 20 days before the alleged release date of the devices, which is close to impossible for patented tech and collaborated tech.and whats even more funny, its coming from renowned journalist ming chi kuo.
3.the problem is the company and mass market itself.while most people may not know this, this tech implemented in consumer grade devices is HUGE.and this will be a giant leap forward in terms proficiency, even more for apple.
4.not all regions may accept this, due to security or superiority reasons, even more for EU.
5.PRICE!who knows what will happen, but their definetly be a profound price bump,if implemented,
                                    lets just see what happens.

Anonymous, 30 Aug 2021If battery is poor with the normal antennas, imagine with that! 🤣And, with that, big tech will control all data, normal networks being eliminated and all control from the majority of states.
Providers will be eliminated, surviving only the big transnational ones, controlled by a few bunch of people

If it detects it's within city where cell towers do exist it will never even trigger connectivity to those satellites. If it detects it's outside of urban areas it switches to that. Assuming cell signal is low.
