Samsung unveils flagship 200MP ISOCELL HP1, 50MP ISOCELL GN5 sensors

02 September 2021
The HP1 will likely be the imager of choice for the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Imo 50mp is the sweet spot not to many tiny useless pixels nor stupidly high resolution to overload the isp
Though I'm excited for this sensor I don't think first gen will give good results imo they should stick to 50mp and increase sensor size

What's the point of having 200 million pixels when you ultimately end up binning them to produce 50MP or 12.5MP images anyway? Obviously 200MP full resolution shots will look like complete garbage due to tiny pixel size, remosaicing algorithms working extremely hard to "reconstruct" the full resolution Bayer pattern which doesn't exist, and diffraction preventing lens from resolving such amount of details in the first place. Why not just make a Tetracell 50MP sensor with 1.28µm pixel pitch? Smh.

So weird that they decided for a sensor smaller then the GN2. I guess that's the reason the we're getting leaks that the Xiaomi 12 Ultra will keep the old sensor.

Anonymous, 02 Sep 20218k 60fps when?Maybe when the Snapdragon 888 supports it. But it won't have stabilisation. Just like how snapdragon 865 doesn't have stabilisation for 8k30 fps but has for 8k24fps. With 888, 8k30fps are stabilised, maybe the next snapdragon will unlock 8k 60fps while the next one shall unlock stabilised 8k60fps.

In lowlight, Mi 11 Ultra is better than S21 Ultra in Auto mode and video. Only in Night mode that the S21 Ultra is better. Imagine if we can get an Pixel 6 Gcam on Mi 12. That would be interesting

                              Anonymous, 02 Sep 20218k 60fps when?Overkill imo

According to Samsung's website, the sensor size is 1/1.22" so yeah, it's smaller than GN2.

But in any case, IMO 200MP is too much. Also, GN5's specs reminds me a lot of IMX766.

This is (most likely) a 1/1.2" sensor.

                                  The GN1 has a 1/1.31" format and 50MP @ 1.2um, the Huawei flagships have 1/1.28" sensors with 50MP @ 1.22um. It's fair to assume that the HP1 with it's 50MP @ 1.28um it's a full 1/1.2" sensor, like the Nokia 808. Smaller than the 1/1.12" GN2 from the Mi 11 Ultra, but bigger than the S21 Ultra's sensor.

The fact that it can shoot 50MP natively in broad daylight, it can shoot native 8K videos and pretty detailed photos, with a good enough ISP it should be better than the Mi 11 Ultra details-wise. 12.5MP for low light is more than enough.
