Ice Universe says the Galaxy S22 Ultra will have continuous zoom 3x and 10x cameras

10 September 2021
They will also get slightly larger 12 MP sensors. The main sensor will stick with the 108 MP, 0.8 µm formula.

AnonD-909757, 11 Sep 2021This might sound like a great news, but remember that this ... moreNothing wrong with punch hole camera, fingerprint sensor > face id/iris scanner, nothing wrong with the ultrasonic, with the edge screens I agree with you, the phones with edges had a lot of accidental touches. The 108mp sensor is second best behind GN2. Also the best zoom then any phone, the only thing lacking with the camera is faster shutter speed and smoother zoom.

This might sound like a great news, but remember that this is Samsung...
Every good/great trends, they fail at implementing them, and the worst one they excel at it.

That's why the superior ultrasonic FPS that should literally dominate the market by now because of its superiority, is still seen as a bad tech because of Samsung's butchered implementation.
And why the punch hole horror is now everywhere, they were also super quick to remove the 3.5mm Jack and to implement curved edge display on EVERY flagships, remove any advanced face biometric and took the underdisplay camera route rather than their own, patented, and superior in every aspect, disappearing camera.

So chances are, they'll fail their implementation of this, and give a bad image to continuously variable zoom which could be properly implemented and give great results, but will instead make everyone want to stay away from it...

Samsung did much more bad than good in the Smartphone industry since several years, since the S8, which was great, they started to deviate from the right path already starting with curved edge display, the S10 only had the main camera layout as any unique and good point and that they didn't remove the Jack yet, anything else was basically bad trends they started.
And the very last positive thing they had, which was to NOT use sub-12Mp sensors, died with the S20, with the S21 stupidly having a 10Mp Telephoto on the Ultra for BOTH Telephoto while the main sensor was the ridiculous and almost uselessly overkill 108Mp one.
Yes, I know, resolution don't do anything, and there is an upper limit after which you get diminishing return, but there is also a lower limit where it starts to be "not enough", MAINLY when you try to use "100x Hybrid zoom" thingy.

All that while killing the Note series, obviously, also while making a replacement that actually don't have the same target audience with foldable phones using the worst solution of foldable display rather than simply having two displays that can simply get perfectly one against the other when the phone is fully opened which is a much cheaper, durable and better solution that achieve the exact same result, so like the Microsoft Surface Duo but without any visible gap between the two displays, exactly like the SAMSUNG "The Wall" tech.

So, yeah, I wouldn't get my hopes anywhere above "expecting to be disappointed"...

the only 2 things I cared is heat issues as Samsung flagship tend to heat up easily and the type of processor I want is snapdragon not exynos

Shanti Dope, 10 Sep 2021In order for that to work, the 3x zoom camera must be of so... moreWhat are you on about? The idea is to have the middle sensor continuous zoom from 1-3 and the large zoom triple that from 3-10. What you're thinking of is how the S21U works, with digital zoom covering each triple zoom.

Two zoom lenses with a variable focal length. Sounds like a possibility for two periscope zoom lenses right there.

Stay away, always (nearly) problems with Sammy flagship, bugs, heat problems etc.
            Not the headache money worth.

AnonD-762416, 10 Sep 2021Let me explain it so you understand it, too, not that it ou... moreIn order for that to work, the 3x zoom camera must be of some incredibly high resolution and relatively large sensor to allow lossless crop zoom. Even then, it would be extremely difficult to maintain good quality until 10x reach, so the best way to compensate for that is to implement Sony's variable periscope design and then upgrade it to have more focal length stops.
I'd say being able to switch by 1x increments optically would be the most ideal, but that would take up a lot of space, so Idk how manufacturers will do it, but that's most likely the best way to achieve that "continuous" zoom.

Shadocx, 10 Sep 2021You can't step back when there is a wall or something ... moreBut then again, with an ultrawide angle camera, the purpose is to capture the entire scene as a whole, which means pixel-peeping quality will not matter so much. In that case, even a 1/2.55" 12MP camera will be more than sufficient for the task, and that's how the manufacturers see no reason to give it a major upgrade, as making the sensor larger will also make the lens larger, or stick with a similar size lens but end up with narrower fov.

Mapantz, 10 Sep 2021That's got nothing to do with continuous zoom. It mean... moreLet me explain it so you understand it, too, not that it ought to be particularly complicated:
The point with having 3 different zoom level lenses is to reduce the need of digital zoom between the little-est one and the biggest one. The point with continuous zoom is to allow one lens to work "optimally" at different zoom levels. So, here's the important bit, applying continuous zoom to two lenses give the possibility of having an optimal lens at any zoom level between 1x and 10x. That was my point. Having them overlap seamlessly would be optimal.

AnonD-762416, 10 Sep 2021If they can make that appear seamless from 1x to 10x, that ... moreThat's got nothing to do with continuous zoom. It means periscope zoom lenses won't be locked at a single focal length. It means no cropping of images or nasty processing to fill in the blanks.

The Nokia N93 from 2006 has continuous zoom!

I suppose it is more translation issue.
Weeks ago he said setup was basically same, just trading 10MP for 12.
                        Keeping fixed focal length.

                        Let's suppose it is 72-120mm and 240-288mm.

                        1) there would be huge gap from 120 to 240. And digital zoom is weaker with lower resolution.
                        2) where would samsung find space for 2 periscopes?

This makes no sense. Oppo is testing the 80-200mm (may be used by X4 Pro). System is supplied by same company that also sells to Samsung Mobile.
So why not using single system like Oppo?

We'll probably get HM4 108mp, 12mp 1.4um UW, 12mp 1.22um.3x and 10x again. Xiaomi will get the 200mp first as always. Or, hopefully 🤞 Note 22 Ultra will

This would be an amazing upgrade over the existing models

walkman8, 10 Sep 2021You have gaming phones for the best possible performance. Instead of buying a gaming phone just invest in a highly portable thin gaming laptop. Gaming phones are a waste of money since the components are non-modular and the performance difference compared to a normal flagship isn’t huge.

It’s Xiaomi who pushes half-baked tech like the UD camera, Mix 4 cannot compete with Z Fold 3 with just 4MP. Samsung both innovates and ensures tech is properly “baked”. Yes Samsung phones have a fair share of issues recently and their Exynos SoC is a joke.

Another rushed garbage phone with half baked tech and a skyhigh pricetag. iPhone 13 Pro Max will crush that phone and iPhone 14 Pro max will crush anything Samsung has ever made (Foldables too).

Just wait and see which phones sell the most - Samsung S22 series or iPhone 13 series.
