Increasing virtual RAM does help a lot when it comes to background running apps. It won't make any difference for flagship smartphones, but it really does pay dividend for low-end budget and entry-level smartphones. I still have my Nokia Lumia 830, which is my first ever Windows Phone device since I first left Android all the way back in July 2016, of which I have manually increased the virtual RAM from the default 256MB to 1.87GB. Since I did that, I never experience any sudden app restart or crashes when using multiple apps.

Wouldn't this kill the internal storage SSD/flash memory much faster?

I really wonder is the virtual memory will work the way it should.
                        I really dont think so.
You either have it withing your phone or dont have it.

Its same like with Apple CPU its fastest CPU in a phone but only on paper and in numbers.
In real life experience even Apart the maybe Unisoc and maybe Exynos every other CPU like Snapdragon, Kirin or Mediatek does a lot better job with much less struggling, heating and laggy buuggy and throtling problems.
Said fact proven by many users of non-apple world.

Lmao at that download more ram joke, nice one.
Tbh I also don't understand what's the use of paging for VRAM for devices that already have 6gb or more RAM, can the RAM even be fully utilized?

So no more "download free ram" meme, jokes on you memers

GAMIRSFM, 11 Sep 2021I wonder, how much do you think is enough RAM? Because i h... moreThe eternal power vs casual user debate.

Most people are casual users. Companies design their products to best serve this market segment--the largest by a wide margin. The needs of power users are an afterthought.

I almost always max out RAM on devices because I'm a power user and a dyed-in-the-wool multi-tasker. In comparison, it'd be a colossal waste of money for my relatives. My desktop has 128 GB of RAM. My Tab S7+ has 12 GB of RAM. I'll be upgrading my 16 GB RAM Surface Pro 7 to a 32 GB RAM Pro 8; as I use it as a portable PC.

It's beyond obvious to me these variants are overkill for 80+% of the world's population.

Lastly, this brought the RAM spec race on smartphones to a decisive end. Beyond 12 GB RAM, the number of folks who actually need, drops like a rock. Consequently, OEMs feel emboldened to price gouge power users who max out. Got the Asus 5S Pro 16/256 because I couldn't justify the surcharge on the 18/512. Don't get me started on Apple and their shenanigans.

Storage is another kettle of fish. I upgrade my NAS as desired (and shelled for a portable, anti-shock 8TB external SSD), rather than chase the most internal or external storage on/for a device (the cost adds up). Not for everyone either, as there are pros who need a lot of on-the-go, internal storage.

In all, the takeaway is modern electronic devices are tools. Get a configuration that's adequate for your needs and be more concerned about other important things in life.

Though it is far from ideal. Also, I wouldn't trust smartphone NAND to sustain such continuous read/writes for years. Finally, as you've said, 4K R/W are suboptimal. IOPS, Random R/W and 4K R/W are extremely important for this kind of usage. High end SSDs (especially modern PCIe 3.0x4 NVMe drives like the Samsung 970 series and Gen 4s too) excell in that domain but they are vastly superior compared to the best of today's UFS. SATA SSDs cheat a bit by having RAM inside, plus fast SLC cache. Forget those in smartphones.
