Flashback: the Apple iPhone X and its hated but influential notch

I like the notch because it has a function. It houses the cameras and sensors required in a discreet space up the top. I never even notice it when I use my phone (iPhone X).
What’s really funny is all the cheap brands that came out afterwards with the same notch just so they could look like an iPhone. Or better still- a new phone like the night Samsung fold that did away with the notch, only to have terrible performance because it was engineered properly.
Apple just too class leading at phones.

Anonymous, 19 Sep 2021People bought it for the familiar iOS operating system and ... moreI've had fingerprint scanner before and I don't think I'd ever go back to it from FaceID. Even with all the masks and stuff. Well, unless I pick any Android phone again which just don't have any facial recognition for biometrics anyways.

The irony with the notch is that Android OEMs like LG and Huawei can hide it well. Even Google can't do it with the Pixel 3 XL.

I can promise you that Apple will not be removing the notch next year 2022.
Why?
Normally, Apple makes a "New Base" version that focusses on form-factor, followed by an "S" version which noticeably improves with a sharper camera, or faster processor, or better battery life (or a combination). The iPhone 8 was more of an iPhone 7S. The iPhone X was a Beta test, with the iPhone XS being the "New Base". Which meant the iPhone 11 was actually an "S" version (as is evident by its SoC and Camera). The iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 are virtually identical, and were unfortunately affected by the pandemic. They together represent "New Base" version. So next year, we are expecting an "S" version.
For more proof, they only JUST reduced the Large Notch size to Medium by a mediocre 20% and are using this as a differentiator or selling point. Apple are just slow when it comes to transitions. So in 2022, they will keep the same boxy-formfactor, the Medium Notch, 5G, and 120Hz OLED, all those features and won't really be introducing any new features.
So, don't be sad we will be getting an "S" version with the iPhone 13S (or iPhone 14), frankly, these are my favourites as you're not a Beta tester, they come with more optimised software than "New Models", and generally are supported much longer than the "New Base" versions. So how is Apple going to improve or differentiate the iPhone 13S ?
- Cameras
The iPhone 13 camera is technically is marginally better than the iPhone 12, which also wasn't too much of an upgrade over the iPhone 11 camera. Since the release of the Pixel 6, and the other devices Apple will need the upgrade. So I expect we will get a very noticeable/big hardware upgrade here with the iPhone 13S.
- Processor
The A15 is stupid fast, but its reported to be ~5% faster than the A14 which itself was barely any faster than the A13 from 2019. So they're due for an upgrade here. They will use more advanced and faster processor, and this will come at the expense of slightly reduced battery life.
...is that all?
Yep. Apple will save the "under-display" FaceID for their next "New Base" version which will be in 2023 or later. And they will also save upgrading the port, which will either use Lightning Port based on a VERY FAST USB-4 standard, or they will transition to a USB-3 with a TypeC connector (which might require an MFI certificate), or Apple will make a "portless phone" and they will bump up the performance of the Wireless Charger (eg/ 10%-90% in 30min ?).

AnonD-1018819, 19 Sep 2021I guess that's why it's still selling in hundreds... morePeople bought it for the familiar iOS operating system and apps. I don't think anyone actually liked the notch or thought FaceID was a good replacement for TouchID.

SMIRNAS, 19 Sep 2021still hate notch if Steve Jobs still alive, I'm s... moreThat's true. The notch does not align with Steven Jobs' aesthetics which is clear lines and minimal design. The notch sticks out too much and demands too much attention. He probably would have gone crazy looking at it.

SMIRNAS, 19 Sep 2021still hate notch if Steve Jobs still alive, I'm s... moreI guess that's why it's still selling in hundreds of millions every year... We may not like everything it does and that it's not always raging bleeding edge stuff, but they do some things really well and if you're into those things, it's far better option than any Android. If not, then you'll be looking at Android phones anyways.

if Steve Jobs still alive,
I'm sure he won't approve Notch Design,,
but rather use Thin Bazel design like Galaxy S9 series and will be the first phone to utilize use UnderDisplay Fingerprint.
imo,,
iPhone died with Steve Jobs

Hemedans, 19 Sep 2021Some iphone has great battery life, Iphone 11 pro max is on... moreThe regular Iphone 11 has good battery life too, but the battery health is kinda disappointing for me. After 1 year of usage BH already dropped to 91% despite I am using the genuine 20W charger and optimized charging. I also used Iphone 12 for 2 months but found out battery life is actually worse than the 11, so I sold it and keep the 11.
Planning to get the 11's battery replaced and enquired that the total costs to do so at an authorised center is nearly 20% of what I paid for my Iphone 11 128GB. Gulp! Starting to think Apple is relatively cheap to repair only in US, but not for other countries. I am in Malaysia.

I don’t really care about the notch as an iPhone user. Just get rid of the Lightning port. It’s stupid as it’s not an open standard and charges slower.

AnonD-1018330, 19 Sep 2021The most funny thing is that androids are following everyth... moreThis is just from my own experience, so it may differ from what others are saying. Iphone 12 actually has worse battery life than Iphone 11 despite having OLED and more efficient chipset and that is only on 4G network. Using 5G would make it barely lasting half a day.
The part you said about excellent service though, pretty sure even loyal Apple users are not happy about locking the 3rd party ability to repair. Apple said it is to guarantee reliability, but we all know the real reason is Apple wants to earn more from after sales since Apple usually charge higher for repairs. Yeah, I get it Apple makes great products but they are not always an improvement year on year like the PR trying to portray.

Sure a completely bezeless screen looks good but its retarded to make holes and notches when those are going to be in the way when using it.
